Conventional High-Temperature Superconductivity in Metallic, Covalently Bonded, Binary-Guest C-B Clathrates

Nisha Geng et al.

Summary: Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed on compounds with up to two different metal atoms, and it was found that the size of the metal cation is crucial for the stability of the B-C framework. High-throughput DFT calculations identified 22 dynamically stable XYB6C6 binary-guest compounds, expanding the number of synthesizable phases. The average oxidation state of the metal atoms can tune the density of states and superconducting critical temperature, with KPbB6C6 predicted to have the highest Tc among the studied phases.

Path to high-Tc superconductivity via Rb substitution of guest metal atoms in the SrB3C3 clathrate

Peiyu Zhang et al.

Summary: A new host-guest compound SrB3C3 with a sp(3)-bonded boron-carbon framework was synthesized under high pressure, where Sr2+ ions are inserted into the (B3C3)3- framework. Previous calculations show that this compound is a hole conductor and has a significant superconducting critical temperature under ambient pressure. By substituting Sr2+ ions with Rb ions of similar size, the electronic and superconductivity properties of the material can be modified. Through extensive simulations using density functional calculations and structure prediction methods, a phonon-mediated superconductor Rb0.5Sr0.5B3C3 with a remarkably high critical temperature under ambient pressure was predicted.

High-Tc superconductivity in doped boron-carbon clathrates

Simone Di Cataldo et al.

Summary: We report a high-throughput ab initio study on the thermodynamic and superconducting properties of recently synthesized XB3C3 clathrates. These compounds, with a spongelike network of boron and carbon interconnected cages each enclosing a central X atom, have the potential to achieve high-Tc conventional superconductivity at ambient pressure.

High-temperature superconductivity in SrB3C3 and BaB3C3 predicted from first-principles anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg theory

Jin-Ning Wang et al.

Summary: Recently, carbon-boron clathrate SrB3C3 has been successfully synthesized, showing potential superconductivity. Studies reveal that SrB3C3 is a single-gap superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature of 40K, while the transition temperature of BaB3C3 can be increased to 43K.

Phase stability and superconductivity of lead hydrides at high pressure

Bole Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, density functional theory calculations and crystal structure predictions using particle swarm optimization method were combined to determine stable hydrides of lead under pressure. PbH6 was found to be the first stable hydride, offering a potentially straightforward route towards synthesis with moderately high Tc values indicating superconductivity. Competitive PbH4 and PbH6 structures were identified to have layered structures while PbH8 structures show a beta-Sn structure with quasi-one-dimensional hydrogen chains.
