An organic solvent-assisted catalyst-free mechanochemical reaction is developed for synthesizing lithium hydride under mild gas pressures and room temperature. The formation of intermediates on the surface of bulk lithium metal is found crucial for achieving high purity (>98%) LiH synthesis. This provides a new strategy for large-scale production of lithium-based hydrogen storage materials.
