Precision measurement of the transition energy gamma(t) versus magnetic rigidity for storage-ring isochronous mass spectrometry

M. Zhang et al.

Summary: This article introduces a method for fast and precise determination of the transition energy gamma(t) of a heavy-ion storage ring, which avoids particle identification and is suitable for real-time monitoring of ion optical settings during experiments.

First Application of Mass Measurements with the Rare-RI Ring Reveals the Solar r-Process Abundance Trend at A=122 and A=123

H. F. Li et al.

Summary: The Rare-RI Ring (R3) is a newly commissioned mass spectrometer at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) in RIKEN, dedicated to measuring the mass of exotic nuclei far from stability. The first application of the R3 mass spectrometer at RIBF is reported, where masses of several rare isotopes were measured with improved uncertainty. This new technique of individual injection of preidentified rare nuclei is essential for future mass measurements of the rarest isotopes produced at RIBF. The impact of a new measurement on the solar r-process abundances is also discussed.

Origin of the heaviest elements: The rapid neutron-capture process

John J. Cowan et al.

Summary: The rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) is responsible for about half of the heavy elements found in nature, but uncertainties and open questions remain. Studies suggest that the production of the majority of heavy r-process elements may be associated with neutron-rich conditions, such as neutron star mergers.

Masses of exotic nuclei

T. Yamaguchi et al.

Summary: Recent developments in precision mass spectrometry of radioactive isotopes have significantly improved sensitivity and precision, with modern methods storing freshly produced exotic nuclei for higher accuracy. Techniques like Penning-trap mass spectrometry have achieved mass accuracies of typically 10(-8) for radioactive nuclei, contributing to nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, and fundamental interaction studies. New technologies like multi-reflection time-of-flight spectrometers and mass spectrometry based on heavy-ion storage rings are gaining importance for studying exotic short-lived nuclei.
