Distribution, risk assessment, and source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using positive matrix factorization (PMF) in urban soils of East India

Balram Ambade et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and sources of PAHs in urban soils from two industrial cities in east India and assessed their health risks to humans. The results showed that HMW PAHs (4-5 rings) were predominant, with major sources of contamination being petroleum combustion, vehicular emissions, biomass, and coal combustion. The health risk assessment indicated some carcinogenic risk for adults, although the cumulative probability of carcinogenic risks was generally within acceptable limits.

Summary: The study found an inverse relationship between urinary PAH metabolites and muscle mass and grip strength in male participants, while no significant relationship was found in female participants. Additionally, gender-specific causal relationship between PAHs and muscle atrophy was revealed in the laboratory study.

Summary: The study found no significant relationship between prenatal exposure to PAHs in pregnant women and newborn health indicators. There was a significant correlation between exposure to passive smoke and total PAHs concentrations, providing important insights for future research on PAH intake sources.

Thyroid Dysfunction of Zebrafish (Danio rerio) after Early-Life Exposure and Discontinued Exposure to Tetrabromobiphenyl (BB-80) and OH-BB-80

Xiaofang Zhang et al.

Summary: The flame retardants BB-80 and OH-BB-80 have adverse effects on thyroid hormone levels, thyroid tissue, and gene expression in zebrafish. BB-80 causes pathological changes in the thyroid, while OH-BB-80 increases thyroid hormone content. After discontinued exposure, both BB-80 and OH-BB-80 downregulate thyroid-related genes, but the whole-body thyroid hormone levels fail to fully recover.

Deposition of trace metals associated with atmospheric particulate matter: Environmental fate and health risk assessment

Meththika Vithanage et al.

Summary: This review examines the concentration of trace metals (TMs) in atmospheric deposition and its potential impacts on human and ecosystem health. The concentration of TMs in dry deposition varies with sources, while in wet deposition, it depends on the solubility of TMs. Health risk assessments suggest that ingestion and dermal contact pathways pose potential health risks. Future research should focus on modeling and predicting the fate and transfer of TMs from natural and anthropogenic sources to inform pollution control policies and measures.

Relationship between urinary metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and risk of papillary thyroid carcinoma and nodular goiter: A case-control study in non-occupational populations

Boying Liu et al.

Summary: Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may increase the risk of thyroid nodular goiter (NG)/papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), with a gender-specific effect observed. Elevated concentrations of specific OH-PAHs in NG and PTC patients are associated with increased disease risk.

Diet derived polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and its pathogenic roles in colorectal carcinogenesis

Tracie Cheng et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are molecules that contaminate meat products during high-temperature cooking and are associated with colorectal cancer. PAHs promote the development of colorectal cancer through mechanisms such as DNA damage. Research on genetic polymorphisms suggests a potential link between PAH-meat intake and carcinogenesis of colorectal malignancies.

Summary: The study found an association between thyroid dysfunction and sex hormone levels, but causality is still unclear. At a genetic level, thyroid hormones have an impact on sex hormone levels, but there is no clear association with sexual function.

A review on analysis methods, source identification, and cancer risk evaluation of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Lord Famiyeh et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmentally persistent, mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic compounds. This review discusses their sources, metabolism, temporal variations, and analytical methods for extraction and characterization. It recommends compound-specific isotopic analysis (CSIA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) for detailed source analysis, highlighting challenges and limitations in using stable carbon isotopic analysis (SCIA) for PAH source apportionment.

Summary: The global pandemic COVID-19 required various responses, including social distancing, mask-wearing, and lockdowns.
