Effects of modification and co-aging with soils on Cd(II) adsorption behaviors and quantitative mechanisms by biochar

Zhuowen Meng et al.

Summary: By modifying rice straw biochar with KMnO4, its adsorption capacity was significantly improved, especially during co-aging with soil. Modified biochar always had higher adsorption capacity than unmodified biochar after aging processes, and its dominant adsorption mechanism was precipitation and adsorption with minerals.

Preparation of ball-milled phosphorus-loaded biochar and its highly effective remediation for Cd- and Pb-contaminated alkaline soil

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: Novel biochar materials were prepared by ball milling and phosphorus loading to enhance their adsorption capacity for heavy metals Cd and Pb. The optimized biochar showed improved soil properties, increased nutrient concentrations, enhanced enzyme activities, decreased metal mobility and plant accumulation, and alleviated stress on maize plants. Overall, these biochar amendments offer promising and ecofriendly solutions for enhancing soil quality and plant productivity in contaminated soil.

Qualitative and quantitative investigation on adsorption mechanisms of Cd (II) on modified biochar derived from co-pyrolysis of straw and sodium phytate

Dezheng Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the modification of biochars using sodium phytate and its effect on the adsorption of Cd(II) from solutions. It was found that the modified biochars had higher adsorption capacities compared to raw biochars. The modification method increased the content of dissolved organic matter and carbonate in the biochars, leading to enhanced adsorption mechanisms. The contribution of co-deposition with dissolved organic matter to adsorption was particularly significant at low pyrolysis temperatures.

Combined use of olive mill waste compost and sprinkler irrigation to decrease the risk of As and Cd accumulation in rice grain

Paula Alvarenga et al.

Summary: Sprinkler irrigation can reduce arsenic accumulation in rice grain compared to flooding irrigation, but it may increase cadmium mobility and accumulation. Applying compost from olive mill waste can decrease cadmium accumulation in rice grain. Additionally, using mature and stable organic amendments can reduce arsenic accumulation in soil and grain.

Effect of aging on stabilization of Cd and Ni by biochars and enzyme activities in a historically contaminated alkaline agricultural soil simulated with wet-dry and freeze-thaw cycling

Kai Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that biochars can reduce the phytoavailability of cadmium and nickel in soil under different aging conditions, with a more significant reduction in nickel under wet-dry aging conditions. The addition of biochars decreased the distribution of cadmium in the acid soluble and reducible fractions in soil, and also had an impact on soil enzyme activities, particularly reducing catalase activity under wet-dry aging conditions.

Study of soil microorganisms modified wheat straw and biochar for reducing cadmium leaching potential and bioavailability

Haris Muhammad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamic effects and potential mechanisms of wheat-straw, wheat-straw biochar, and biologically modified wheat-straw on the adsorption, leaching behavior, chemical fractions, and bioavailability of cadmium. The research revealed that biologically modified wheat-straw had the highest biosorption capacity for Cd and significantly reduced Cd concentration in leachate compared to wheat-straw biochar and wheat-straw treatments. These findings suggest a novel approach for the development of functional materials and strategies for eco-friendly and sustainable trace metal remediation in contaminated soil and water.
