Comparison of different pretreatment methods on phosphorus release and recovery as struvite from excess sludge

Dexiu Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of three sludge pretreatment methods on phosphorus release and struvite recovery from wastewater treatment plant sludge. The results showed that different pretreatment methods led to different characteristics of phosphorus release and recovery. The highest phosphorus release rate and mixed liquor suspended solids reduction rate were achieved by ultrasound combined with EDTA-anaerobic digestion (U-EA) pretreatment, while anaerobic digestion (AD) pretreatment was beneficial for product purity.

Trace metal elements vaporization and phosphorus recovery during sewage sludge thermochemical treatment - A review

B. Galey et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is essential for crop growth, but natural mineral phosphate sources are non-renewable and overexploited worldwide, leading to the need for sustainable phosphorus supply. Thermochemical treatments of sewage sludge spiked with Cl-donors are considered a promising approach to recover phosphorus and separate it from mineral pollutants. The addition of Cl-donors, such as MgCl2, can enhance the fixation rate and solubility of phosphorus, while promoting the vaporization of trace metal elements during high temperature treatments.

Pilot-scale magnetic recovery of vivianite from digested sewage sludge

W. K. Wijdeveld et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is a crucial resource for food production and chemical industry, and its sustainable use requires recycling from secondary sources. Recovering phosphorus from sewage sludge, particularly vivianite, can be achieved at wastewater treatment plants. By increasing iron dosing, the vivianite content and phosphorus recovery can be maximized, meeting German legislation requirements.

Land application of sewage sludge incinerator ash for phosphorus recovery: A review

Persephone Ma et al.

Summary: Recovering phosphorus from sewage sludge incinerator ash (SSA) can help redirect valuable nutrients back into the food system, but requires thorough research on SSA properties, phosphorus availability, contaminant concentrations, and behavior in soil. Approaches for P recovery from SSA must take into account individual characteristics of the material and regional requirements and regulations for land application. In this review, the history of P recovery from SSA is discussed along with research on characterization, contaminants, P availability, and land application of SSA.

Assessment of a simple and replicable procedure for selective phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge ashes by wet chemical extraction and precipitation

Gaia Boniardi et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the selective phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge ashes using wet chemical extraction and precipitation, achieving efficiency between 54% and 92%. Optimal operating conditions included sulfuric acid at 0.2M, liquid-to-solid ratio of 20, and contact time of 2 hours. However, some elements exceeded limits for fertilizer application, necessitating further purification steps.

Albert Magri et al.

Summary: The study shows that simultaneous NH4+-N removal and PO4-P biomineralization can be achieved through the one-stage partial nitritation-anammox process with the addition of external calcium source, forming mineral cores mostly composed of HAP inside the granules. However, the excessive purge of highly mineralized sludge limits microbial activity in the long term, despite the richness of HAP in the densest granules harvested from the bottom of the bioreactor.

Yunfeng Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the correlation between anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge with electrochemical pretreatment, and the release of phosphorus and disintegration of sludge. Results showed that electrochemical pretreatment significantly increased the release of phosphorus and promoted sludge disintegration. Additionally, it led to reduced metal ion content in the sludge supernatant.
