Observation of the crossover between metallic and insulating regimes of the spin Hall effect

Hiroyuki Moriya et al.

Summary: Intense research efforts have provided mechanistic insight into the spin and anomalous Hall effects in metallic samples, but the effect of extrinsic defects is not yet understood. A scaling law describing the spin Hall response of PtO films with increasing oxygen levels reveals an analogy with the anomalous Hall effect in the insulating regime. The universal scaling of the anomalous or spin Hall conductivity with the electric conductivity has been successfully described for metallic systems, revealing the topological nature of these effects.

Giant Spin Hall Effect and Spin-Orbit Torques in 5d Transition Metal-Aluminum Alloys from Extrinsic Scattering

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: The generation of spin currents from charge currents via the spin Hall effect (SHE) is of both fundamental and technological interest. This study found some of the largest SHEs yet observed via extrinsic scattering in a large class of binary compounds formed from a 5d element and aluminum, with a giant spin Hall angle (SHA) of approximate to 1 in the compound Os22Al78. The results demonstrate the importance of extrinsic mechanisms derived from potential mismatch as a route to obtaining large spin Hall angles with high technological impact.

Maximizing spin-orbit torque efficiency of Ta(O)/Py via modulating oxygen-induced interface orbital hybridization

Liupeng Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the efficiency of spin-orbit torque generated by interfacial Rashba and spin Hall effects in Ta(O)/Ni81Fe19 bilayers was found to reach maximum values at a certain level of oxidation. Oxygen-induced orbital hybridization across the interface can significantly enhance the efficiency of interfacial spin-orbit torque, suggesting it as an alternative method to boost spin conversion efficiency.

Large spin Hall angle enhanced by nitrogen incorporation in Pt films

Zhan Xu et al.

Summary: Introducing nitrogen into the Pt thin film enhances the spin Hall angle at the CoFeB/Pt interface, with a non-monotonic variation as a function of the amount of nitrogen gas introduced. The enhancement is mainly attributed to the increase in spin-dependent scattering at the interface, with a decrease in effective magnetic damping as nitrogen amount increases. Additionally, improved interfacial spin transparency and enhanced linewidth modulation are observed after the introduction of nitrogen.

Highly dose dependent damping-like spin-orbit torque efficiency in O-implanted Pt

Utkarsh Shashank et al.

Summary: In this study, the damping-like torque efficiency was increased more than 3.5 times by using a better approach of low energy O+ ion implantation in modified Pt-oxide. The spin transmission was improved with a smaller trade-off in the longitudinal resistivity, and the enhanced spin Hall effect in O-implanted Pt was attributed to a side-jumping mechanism. The torques from the O-implanted Pt remained twofold and symmetrical, allowing for quantification using spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance-based line shape analysis.

Maximizing spin-orbit torque generated by the spin Hall effect of Pt

Lijun Zhu et al.

Summary: Platinum, with its giant spin Hall conductivity and compatibility with CMOS circuits, has the potential to be an outstanding provider of spin-orbit torques; however, pure clean-limit Pt with low resistivity still provides a low damping-like spin-orbit torque efficiency, limiting its practical applications; the efficiency of spin-orbit torque in Pt-based magnetic heterostructures can be significantly improved by increasing the spin Hall ratio of Pt and the spin transmissivity of the interfaces.
