HSPA4 Is a Biomarker of Placenta Accreta and Enhances the Angiogenesis Ability of Vessel Endothelial Cells

Sung-Chou Li et al.

Summary: This study identified protein biomarkers for placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) and investigated their role in the pathogenesis of PAS. Heat shock 70 kDa protein 4 (HSPA4) and chorionic somatomammotropin hormone (CSH) were confirmed as PAS protein biomarkers, and HSPA4 was found to promote angiogenesis in vitro.

Emerging methods for and novel insights gained by absolute quantification of mitochondrial DNA copy number and its clinical applications

Brian Li et al.

Summary: Over the past thirty years, there has been a surge in interest in the pathophysiological roles of mitochondria, and accurate quantification of mitochondrial DNA copy number (mCN) in cells and tissues is crucial for assessing changes in mitochondrial health and biogenesis. Novel methods such as digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) and high-throughput sequencing offer the ability to measure absolute values of mCN.

Telomere length and mitochondrial DNA copy number in bipolar disorder: identification of a subgroup of young individuals with accelerated cellular aging

L. Spano et al.

Summary: The accelerated cellular aging in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with decreased telomere length (TL) and mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn). In this study, it was found that both TL and mtDNAcn were significantly lower in individuals with BD compared to healthy controls (HC), and these markers could effectively distinguish between the two groups. Furthermore, a subgroup of young individuals with accelerated cellular aging, characterized by shorter TL and lower mtDNAcn, was identified, primarily consisting of individuals with BD. This subgroup was not associated with specific clinical variables related to the course of BD or childhood maltreatment, but these patients were more frequently treated with anticonvulsants.

The Complicated Nature of Somatic mtDNA Mutations in Aging

Monica Sanchez-Contreras et al.

Summary: Mitochondria are the main source of energy in cells and play a potential role in age-related tissue dysfunction. However, the exact contribution of mtDNA mutations to aging and its associated pathologies is still debated. In this review, the authors summarize the current understanding of somatic mtDNA mutations, including their timing, location, and mechanisms during aging. They also evaluate the limitations in our knowledge and highlight emerging technologies that can advance our understanding of somatic mtDNA mutagenesis in the aging process.

Summary: Cellular senescence is a physiological mechanism with beneficial roles in physiology, but can also have antagonistic effects in diseases and cancer. Despite the establishment of a general set of hallmarks describing senescence, complexities such as phenotype heterogeneity have made recognition and evaluation challenging.

Mechanisms of Cellular Senescence: Cell Cycle Arrest and Senescence Associated Secretory Phenotype

Ruchi Kumari et al.

Summary: Cellular senescence is a stable cell cycle arrest triggered in response to various stimuli, characterized by dynamic changes in senescent cells. It has both positive effects on tissue repair and anti-cancer mechanisms, but can also negatively impact organismal health. Multiple pathways, including p53/p21 and p16/pRB, play central roles in regulating this process.
