Continuum effective Hamiltonian for graphene bilayers for an arbitrary smooth lattice deformation from microscopic theories

Oskar Vafek et al.

Summary: We derive the continuum Hamiltonian for a graphene bilayer from a microscopic lattice theory, allowing for various lattice deformations, including twist. Two different microscopic models are analyzed: Slater-Koster model and ab initio derived model. The effective Hamiltonian can be used with experimentally determined lattice deformation in twisted bilayer graphene to predict and compare electronic spectra with scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements. The approach also provides electron-phonon couplings in the continuum Hamiltonian from microscopic models for any bilayer stacking. In a companion paper, continuum models for relaxed atomic configurations of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene are analyzed in detail.

Degradation of Phonons in Disordered Moire Superlattices

Hector Ochoa et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the characteristics of phason modes in moire superlattices are affected by disorder in the relative orientation between layers and thermal fluctuations, leading to a degradation in sound propagation. Specifically, the phason modes become overdamped at low energies and acquire a finite gap, which displays a universal dependence on the twist-angle variance.

Spin-orbit-driven ferromagnetism at half moire filling in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Jiang-Xiazi Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the combined influence of strong electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling on a two-dimensional electronic system at the interface between twisted bilayer graphene and tungsten diselenide crystal. The research shows that strong electron correlation stabilizes correlated insulating states at different fillings within the moire flatband and spin-orbit coupling transforms these insulators into ferromagnetic materials. The coupling between spin and valley degrees of freedom can be controlled with a magnetic or electric field.

Narrow bands in magnetic field and strong-coupling Hofstadter spectra

Summary: We develop an efficient method to determine the Hofstadter spectrum of isolated narrow bands. The method works for both topological and trivial narrow bands by projecting Wannier states onto a representation of the magnetic translation group. We apply this method to find the Hofstadter spectrum for charged excitations in twisted bilayer graphene and obtain results even at low magnetic fields.

Evidence for unconventional superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene

Myungchul Oh et al.

Summary: Recent studies on magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) have shown that the superconductivity in MATBG may not be described by the conventional BCS theory, but rather resembles a non-BCS mechanism due to the large density of states in its flat bands. This suggests that the pairing mechanism in MATBG may be unconventional and different from that of conventional superconductors.

Unconventional sequence of correlated Chern insulators in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Summary: The discovery of unexpected incompressible states in MATBG, with Chern numbers incompatible with the simple sequential band filling assumption, can be understood as a consequence of broken translation symmetry that doubles the moire unit cell and splits each flavour band in two. These unusual incompressible phases expand the known phase diagram of MATBG and shed light on the close competition between different correlated phases in the system.

Kekule Spiral Order at All Nonzero Integer Fillings in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

Y. H. Kwan et al.

Summary: In this study, a fundamentally new type of order, the incommensurate Kelcule spiral (IKS) order, in magic angle graphene under small strains is discovered and discussed. This order breaks emergent valley-charge conservation and moire translation symmetries while preserving a modified translation symmetry (T) over cap' which shifts spatial coordinates and rotates the U(1) angle. The findings are consistent with experimental observations, providing a unified explanation of the global phase diagram in terms of the IKS order.

Entropic evidence for a Pomeranchuk effect in magic-angle graphene

Asaf Rozen et al.

Summary: The study reveals a transition from a low-entropy electronic liquid to a high-entropy correlated state in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene under the influence of electron density, temperature, and magnetic field. The correlated state demonstrates a unique combination of properties associated with itinerant electrons and localized moments, with distinct energy scales for different characteristics. The hybrid nature of the correlated state and the separation of energy scales have significant implications for the thermodynamic and transport properties of twisted bilayer graphene.

Flavour Hund's coupling, Chern gaps and charge diffusivity in moire graphene

Jeong Min Park et al.

Summary: Interaction-driven spontaneous symmetry breaking plays a key role in the emergence of correlated and topological ground states in moire systems such as magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG). Through thermodynamic and transport measurements, we have observed broken spin/valley 'flavour' symmetry in MATBG and its nontrivial topology. Furthermore, the topological nature of the flat bands is revealed by breaking time-reversal symmetry, leading to the observation of Chern insulator states with different Chern numbers at specific filling factors. Our findings shed light on the understanding of interactions in the topological bands of MATBG, both with and without a magnetic field.

Summary: Twisted bilayer graphene exhibits two-regime reconstruction mechanics based on twist angle, with applied heterostrain accumulating anisotropically in saddle-point regions to generate distinctive striped strain phases. Imaging orbital ferromagnetism in a moire Chern insulator

Summary: Researchers have found that electrons in moire flat band systems can break time-reversal symmetry, leading to a quantized anomalous Hall effect, with magnetism primarily orbital in nature. The study also reveals a significant change in magnetization as the chemical potential crosses the quantum anomalous Hall gap, consistent with the expected contribution of chiral edge states to the magnetization in an orbital Chern insulator. Additionally, mapping the spatial evolution of field-driven magnetic reversal shows reproducible micrometer-scale domains pinned to structural disorder.

Twisted bilayer graphene. V. Exact analytic many-body excitations in Coulomb Hamiltonians: Charge gap, Goldstone modes, and absence of Cooper pairing

B. Andrei Bernevig et al.

Summary: In this study, exact analytic expressions for the energies and wave functions of charged and neutral excitations above the ground state in twisted bilayer graphene are determined, considering various forms of Coulomb interaction and tunneling. It was found that the Cooper pair binding energy is zero in all projected Coulomb models for actual TBG bands, indicating that superconductivity may require other factors such as phonons or nonzero kinetic energy. The study also suggests that if superconductivity is driven by kinetic terms, the highest critical temperature may not necessarily occur at the maximum density of states.
