Materials synthesis at terapascal static pressures

Leonid Dubrovinsky et al.

Summary: The study presents a new method for achieving terapascal pressure in static compression experiments with laser heating. The researchers successfully synthesized a rhenium-nitrogen alloy and a stable rhenium nitride under extreme compression. In situ synchrotron single-crystal X-ray diffraction was used for the full chemical and structural characterization of the materials.

Experimental and theoretical examination of shock-compressed copper through the fcc to bcc to melt phase transitions

Melissa Sims et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that several metals undergo a transformation from face-centered cubic (fcc) to body-centered cubic (bcc) structure during shock compression. Experiments and simulations have revealed that this fcc to bcc transition occurs at high pressures and temperatures, and the bcc structure remains stable at even higher pressures.

Development of a Multiphase Beryllium Equation of State and Physics-based Variations

Christine J. Wu et al.

Summary: A family of beryllium multiphase equation of state models has been constructed to account for different physics-based uncertainties. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, new information about EOS properties for high-temperature liquid and high-pressure bcc phases has been obtained to validate the selected models. The baseline EOS predicts specific density properties and transition pressures, while variations are generated to accommodate various sources of uncertainties.

Laser heating system at the Extreme Conditions Beamline, P02.2, PETRA III

Zuzana Konopkova et al.

Summary: The study presents a laser heating system for samples within diamond anvil cells, combined with in situ X-ray diffraction measurements at the Extreme Conditions Beamline of PETRA III. The system features two independent laser configurations, offering a wide range of experiments. Using ray-tracing methods to simulate the optical path of spectroradiometry measurements allows for evaluation of aberrations in the system and comparison with other simpler lens optics systems.

Melting of Tantalum at Multimegabar Pressures on the Nanosecond Timescale

R. G. Kraus et al.

Summary: Tantalum, once considered a bcc metal, is now predicted to transition to the Pnma phase at high pressures. In in situ x-ray diffraction experiments, tantalum did not transition to the Pnma phase at high pressures but showed incipient melting at approximately 254 GPa and complete melting at 317 GPa. These results are consistent with findings from gas gun experiments, suggesting a melting temperature of 8070 K at 254 GPa.

Establishing gold and platinum standards to 1 terapascal using shockless compression

D. E. Fratanduono et al.

Summary: New techniques are advancing high-pressure physics beyond 1 terapascal, but determining pressure state accurately remains challenging and requires well-calibrated reference materials. Conducting dynamic compression experiments to obtain high-precision pressure-density data can help establish accurate pressure standards and improve connections between theory and experiments in extreme conditions.

Polymorphism of gold under laser-based ramp compression to 690 GPa

Sirus K. Han et al.

Summary: The study investigates the high-pressure behavior and polymorphism of gold by dynamically compressing it up to 690 GPa, revealing its transformation from the face-centered cubic phase to the body-centered cubic phase under extreme conditions. The results are in line with recent shock-compression experiments and provide insight into the phase transition characteristics of gold under different loading conditions.
