Better late than never: Brachytherapy is more important than timing in treatment of locally advanced cervical cancer

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of brachytherapy utilization and treatment duration on overall survival for cervical cancer patients. The results showed that completing standard of care treatment with concurrent chemoradiation therapy and brachytherapy within 8 weeks was associated with superior overall survival. Patients who received brachytherapy had better survival outcomes compared to those who only received external beam radiation therapy, regardless of treatment duration. Disparities in care for vulnerable populations were highlighted, emphasizing the importance of care coordination.

Summary: This article discusses the effectiveness and safety of intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy (IC/IS) in treating large and irregularly shaped uterine cervical cancer patients. Compared to conventional intracavitary brachytherapy (ICBT), IC/IS is more invasive and thus has a slower implementation speed. The article aims to provide practical and comprehensive guidance for radiation oncologists and medical physicists who wish to start IC/IS, and to accelerate the nationwide utilization of IC/IS by sharing the Japanese approach to managing locally advanced uterine cervical cancer.

Brachytherapy training survey among radiation oncology residents in Europe

Summary: This study investigated the current state of brachytherapy (BT) training among radiation oncology trainees in Europe. The results showed that although the trainees considered independent BT practice to be important, they lacked confidence in achieving this goal. Efforts are needed to develop and implement a formal and comprehensive BT curriculum to address this gap.

Summary: The feasibility and reproducibility of the hybrid of intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy were demonstrated in a multi-center prospective clinical trial. High-risk clinical target volume >= 35 ml was associated with an increased risk of any grade of acute non-hematologic adverse events related to the hybrid of intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy.
