Difunctional NH 2-modified MOF supporting plentiful ion channels and stable LiF-rich SEI construction via organocatalysis for all-solid-state lithium metal batteries

Xuanyi Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) modified by two different functional groups (-NH 2 and - CH 3 ) were used as the fillers of polyethylene oxide (PEO) composite solid electrolytes to explore the catalytic effect of groups on LiF generation. The PEO-ZIF-NH 2 with LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) exhibited enhanced cycling performance compared to PEO-ZIF-CH 3 . First-principles calculation revealed that ZIFs-NH 2 made the C-F bond in TFSI- longer, leading to easier breakage and promoted LiF formation. This simple design idea of using organic catalysis provides a new aspect for preparing high-performance lithium metal batteries.

Electro-Chemo-Mechanical Modeling of Artificial Solid Electrolyte Interphase to Enable Uniform Electrodeposition of Lithium Metal Anodes

Yangyang Liu et al.

Summary: This study built an electro-chemo-mechanical model and implemented it in a phase-field modeling to investigate the correlation between the physical properties of artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and lithium deposition. The results demonstrate that improving the ionic conductivity of the SEI can mitigate stress concentration and nonuniform deposition of lithium. Furthermore, the mechanical strength of the SEI also has an influence on the deposition and electrochemical kinetics of lithium.

Li2CO3/LiF-Rich Heterostructured Solid Electrolyte Interphase with Superior Lithiophilic and Li+-Transferred Characteristics via Adjusting Electrolyte Additives

Daxiong Wu et al.

Summary: This study successfully realizes a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with the properties of Li2CO3-rich and LiF-rich types by using different fluorine phenylphospines. The SEI formed in the presence of tris(4-fluorophenyl)phosphine (TFPP) has a balanced Li+ transport kinetics, good electron insulator capability, and strong affinity toward Li+. It effectively guarantees fast and uniform Li+ flux while preventing electron penetration, resulting in stable Li plating/stripping and excellent performance of Li-ion batteries.

Spatiotemporal mapping of microscopic strains and defects to reveal Li-dendrite-induced failure in all-solid-state batteries

Hao Shen et al.

Summary: Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are essential for successful and reliable all-solid-state lithium batteries, with potential improvements in safety and energy density compared to current lithium-ion batteries. However, implementing SSEs faces several challenges, including interfacial instability caused by the interaction of dendritic lithium during cycling. This study emphasizes the importance of studying the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of strains and defects in crystalline SSEs at the micro-scale, and how they affect dendrite growth.
