Aspirin treatment prevents inflammation in experimental bifurcation aneurysms in New Zealand White rabbits

Stefan Wanderer et al.

Summary: In a novel rabbit bifurcation model, the effect of aspirin on aneurysm formation was studied under different wall conditions. Aspirin intake was found to prevent inflammation of both the periadventitial tissue and aneurysm wall. While aspirin prevented significant growth in aneurysms with vital walls, its preventive effect was less significant in elastase-degraded pouches.

Imaging Modalities for Intracranial Aneurysm: More Than Meets the Eye

Clemence Maupu et al.

Summary: Intracranial aneurysms (IA) are often asymptomatic but have a high risk of rupture, leading to death in half of the patients. Invasive surgical procedures are the main treatment, but carry a high risk. Size and location are important indicators for assessing the risk of rupture. Recent findings suggest that factors such as blood flow complexity and inflammation are also involved in this complication, leading to the development of new IA imaging tools.

A Systematic Review Comparing Digital Subtraction Angiogram With Magnetic Resonance Angiogram Studies in Demonstrating the Angioarchitecture of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformations

Aishwarya Raman et al.

Summary: This systematic review explores the possibility of using magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) as a diagnostic tool for brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) instead of digital subtraction angiogram (DSA). The study finds that although MRA has the ability to produce high-quality diagnostic images for AVMs, it is limited by inferior spatial resolution and hemodynamic properties compared to DSA, which remains the gold standard for diagnosis.

Summary: This study established a model of de novo saccular aneurysms and found that regions of growth were exposed to low WSS and high OSI. Macrophage infiltration colocalized with the growing regions, suggesting a potential contribution of low WSS and high OSI to macrophage-mediated growth of saccular aneurysms.

Most studies relied on subjective or qualitative descriptions to define experimental aneurysms and focused on the pathobiology of IA.

Rabbit Elastase Aneurysm: Imaging and Histology Correlates for Inflammation and Healing

James P. Ho et al.

Summary: The study investigated the inflammatory changes associated with aneurysm formation using a rabbit elastase aneurysm model. Three distinct phases were identified through histopathologic analysis, including an initial inflammatory phase, followed by a regeneration phase, and finally a connective tissue deposition phase. Vessel wall imaging demonstrated two distinct imaging patterns, with no significant differences observed in histology or imaging with regard to gender or treatment with aspirin.

Summary: This study compared Wall Shear Stress (WSS) measurements in carotid arteries using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and ultrasound Doppler velocimetry. The results showed that the model-based WSS values were higher but comparable to doppler velocimetry measurements, with the carotid bulb segment being highly disposed to atheromatous plaque formation. incorporating subject-specific mathematical models during cardiovascular scan workup may help predict atherosclerotic sites accurately.
