Cognitive impairment caused by hypoxia: from clinical evidences to molecular mechanisms

Xiaoyin Wang et al.

Summary: Hypoxia can lead to cognitive deficits under both acute and chronic conditions, with chronic hypoxia showing more severe sequelae possibly due to different molecular mechanisms. Various molecular mechanisms such as cardiorespiratory compensatory response, glycolysis, oxidative stress play pivotal roles in hypoxia-induced cognitive deficits.

The human brain in a high altitude natural environment: A review

Xinjuan Zhang et al.

Summary: With the advancement of in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique, more detailed information about the human brain at high altitude (HA) has been revealed. Changes in brain morphology and electrophysiological mechanisms have been explored, with the visual, motor, and insular cortices consistently affected. The findings may shed light on cardiovascular and respiratory regulations and clarify some behavioral mechanisms at HA.

Sleep, short-term memory, and mood states of volunteers with increasing altitude

Huanhuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study identified the association between sleep characteristics and short-term memory, as well as mood states among volunteers at different altitudes and times. The results showed that sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) prevalence increased with rising elevation, and sleep parameters were closely associated with short-term memory and mood states. Higher sleep parameters were associated with more severe mood disorders and impairment of short-term memory. The apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was found to be a critical predictor of negative mood among volunteers at different altitudes.

The role of mTOR signalling pathway in hypoxia-induced cognitive impairment

Entesar Yaseen Abdo Qaid et al.

Summary: mTOR plays a crucial role in hypoxia-induced cognitive impairment, providing neuroprotection during mild or acute hypoxia exposure and potentially leading to neuronal cell death during severe or chronic hypoxia. Keeping mTORC1 activity normal could be explored as a potential strategy to prevent cognitive impairment in severe or chronic hypoxia.

The protective role of SOD1 overexpression in central mediation of bradycardia following chronic intermittent hypoxia in mice

Jin Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH), a model for OSA, impairs baroreflex sensitivity and central regulation of bradycardia in rodents. Overexpression of human Cu/Zn Superoxide Dismutase (SOD1) in transgenic mice prevented the CIH-induced deficit in the baroreflex arc.

Pulmonary Hypertension in Acute and Chronic High Altitude Maladaptation Disorders

Akylbek Sydykov et al.

Summary: Alveolar hypoxia in high altitude environments leads to pulmonary hypertension and potentially life-threatening disorders such as high altitude pulmonary edema. While vasodilators show promise in reducing pulmonary artery pressure in residents at high altitudes, no approved drugs currently exist for treating chronic high altitude pulmonary hypertension.

Summary: Studies have shown that cognitive functions in OSA patients with MCI or AD were mildly improved after CPAP treatment, especially over long-term treatment. However, not all cognitive assessment tests demonstrated significant cognition benefits from CPAP.
