Electrochemical nitrogen fixation in metal-N2 batteries: A paradigm for simultaneous NH3 synthesis and energy generation

Jahidul Islam et al.

Summary: Electrochemical N2 reduction reaction has been used in Metal-N2 batteries to simultaneously fix N2 and generate electricity. However, the presence of the hydrogen evolution reaction in an aqueous medium and the instability of cathode electrocatalysts affect the overall performance. Strategies to design efficient cathode catalysts and electrolytes, as well as methods to suppress unwanted HER, are proposed for future advancements in M-N2 batteries.

Interfacial water engineering boosts neutral water reduction

Kaian Sun et al.

Summary: Understanding the role of interfacial water in neutral media is crucial for improving the rate of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, the authors investigate the synergy between Ru single atoms and RuSex clusters and find that the interfacial water layer plays a critical role in governing neutral HER. By disordering the interfacial water network, RuSex enhances the transport of H2O*/OH* and significantly improves the HER performance in neutral media.

Interfacial Water Activation by Single-Atom Co-N3 Sites Coupled with Encapsulated Co Nanocrystals for Accelerating Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Minmin Wang et al.

Summary: This research proposes an efficient doping-adsorption-pyrolysis strategy to construct a robust coupling catalyst composed of single-atom Co-N-3 sites and Co nanocrystals, which activates the interfacial water to accelerate electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The Co-N-3 sites inhibit the transport of H2O*/OH*, while the Co NCs increase the available H2O*, accelerating the HER process.
