Does sex matter? Analysis of sex-related differences in the diagnostic performance of a market-approved convolutional neural network for skin cancer detection

Katharina Sies et al.

Summary: Advancements in biomedical artificial intelligence may lead to gender biases. This study investigated the sex-related imbalances in training data and diagnostic performance of a market-approved convolutional neural network (CNN) for skin cancer classification. Despite the imbalances in training data, the tested CNN showed comparable performance in classifying skin lesions from female and male patients without any sex-related biases.

Sex Differences in Risk of Severe Adverse Events in Patients Receiving Immunotherapy, Targeted Therapy, or Chemotherapy in Cancer Clinical Trials

Joseph M. Unger et al.

Summary: Women have a higher risk of severe adverse events (AEs) from cancer treatment compared to men, especially in immunotherapy. The study found that there are broad-based sex differences in the severity of symptomatic AEs and hematologic AEs across different treatment modalities. Understanding the sex differences in AEs is important, particularly in the context of immunotherapy.

Pan-cancer analysis reveals sex-specific signatures in the tumor microenvironment

Junwei Han et al.

Summary: The sex of cancer patients affects the processes of cancer initiation, progression, and response to therapy. This study analyzes immune infiltration signatures in different cancer types to evaluate how sex may affect the tumor microenvironment (TME). The findings suggest that sex can shape the TME and sex-specific TME biomarkers may help tailor cancer immunotherapy in certain cancer types.

Sex-based differences in histology, staging, and prognosis among 2983 gastric cancer surgery patients

Yonghoon Choi et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the differences in gastric cancer characteristics according to sex in patients who underwent surgical treatment. Female patients were found to have a younger age at diagnosis, higher prevalence of cancer in the gastric body and diffuse histology, and higher overall survival rate. However, the difference in gastric cancer-specific survival rate was not significant. Older age, upper location of cancer, and diffuse or mixed histology were identified as risk factors for gastric cancer-related mortality. Males had a higher mortality rate from diseases other than gastric cancer, while females had a higher mortality rate from cardiovascular or cerebrovascular diseases.

Summary: Esophageal cancer is the seventh most common cancer globally, with preventive measures and clinical management differing based on histologic subtype. Adenocarcinoma has become the most frequent type of esophageal cancer in some Western countries, with obesity and metabolic syndrome identified as important risk factors. Population-based targeted screening endoscopy is recommended for high-risk individuals. This study analyzed incidence and mortality trends in esophageal cancer across 48 countries, revealing increases in adenocarcinoma incidence in certain countries and the need for more preventive measures.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
