The study of biological activity of mandelic acid and its alkali metal salts in wastewaters

Marzena Matejczyk et al.

Summary: In this study, we compared the biological activity of mandelic acid and its salts in different environments and concentrations. We found that factors such as study environment, metal forming salt, and compound concentration influenced the antibacterial activity of MA and its salts. Additionally, raw and treated wastewaters significantly altered the activity of MA and its salts compared to microbial medium. Analysis of ROS synthesis indicated that oxidative stress is the dominant mechanism of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in most mandelic acid salts.

Antimicrobial Properties of Mandelic Acid, Gallic Acid and their Derivatives

Renata Choi Ska et al.

Summary: This study discussed the biological properties of two popular AHAs, MA and GA, with focus on their antimicrobial properties. It was found that derivatives of these acids generally exhibit higher antimicrobial activity than the acids themselves, likely due to their increased lipophilicity for better cell membrane penetration. This suggests the potential for designing new compounds with improved health-promoting effects based on these AHAs and their derivatives.
