Development and techno-economic evaluation of coal to ethylene glycol process and Allam power cycle and carbon capture and storage and integration process

Yaru Zhou et al.

Summary: The coal to ethylene glycol process (CTEG) is strategically and practically significant due to the carbon emissions and energy consumption associated with coal conversion and utilization. It has been shown that innovative CTEG processes, such as the novel coal poly-generation system integrated with the Allam cycle and the coal to ethylene glycol process integrated with the Allam cycle and water electrolysis, can effectively reduce carbon emissions and improve carbon efficiency, leading to economic benefits.

Site isolated Ru clusters and sulfoacids in a yolk-shell nanoreactor towards cellulose valorization to 1,2-propylene glycol

Ying Yang et al.

Summary: This study developed a highly selective catalyst for cellulose hydrolysis, which can directly convert cellulose into high yield 1,2-propylene glycol. The catalyst, formed by layer-by-layer assembly in a yolk-shell nanoreactor, achieves the synergism of metal and acid sites and provides a favorable diffusion pathway for reaction species. After optimization, the catalyst exhibits high selectivity towards 1,2-propylene glycol.

The comparative life-cycle environmental effects of chemical feedstock change driven by energy system transition: A case study from China's ethylene glycol industry

Huimin Qian et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of different production routes on the feedstock and environmental burdens of China's chemical manufacturing industry using ethylene glycol production as an example. It finds that replacing coal with shale gas can reduce overall environmental stresses, but also increase certain specific environmental burdens. Scenario analysis further suggests that feedstock change and production growth will increase the environmental burdens of China's ethylene glycol industry in the future.

Copper-tetracyanoquinodimethane-derived copper electrocatalysts for highly selective carbon dioxide reduction to ethylene

Xuewei Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, copper-tetracyanoquinodimethane (CuTCNQ) derived Cu nanoparticles were used as efficient electrocatalysts for the conversion of CO2 to ethylene with high selectivity and stability. The results show that both the Cu nanoparticle grain boundaries and the residual Cu+ contribute to the high selectivity of the catalyst, and the reconstruction process ensures the electrocatalytic stability.

The response of the industrial system to the interrelationship approaching to carbon neutrality of carbon sources and sinks from carbon metabolism: Coal chemical case study

Junnian Wu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a framework of Ecological Network Analysis (ENA) combined with Eco-efficiency to assess the interaction among carbon sources and sinks and measure the economic cost of the environmental impact of the new coal chemical industrial system. The results show that the indirect interaction and mutualism relationship of carbon sources and sinks can improve carbon utilization efficiency. Coal gasification and low-temperature methanol washing are key carbon sources with high control degree that should be modified with priority.

Effect of Acid Treatment on Electrocatalytic Performance of PtNi Catalyst

Ruihua Guo et al.

Summary: This paper describes the synthesis of AC-PtNi/G catalysts with graphene as the carrier through alcohol reduction and sulfuric acid treatment. The catalysts showed a more uniform dispersion with smaller particle size after acid treatment, and the electrocatalytic performance of the AC-PtNi/G-48h catalyst was significantly better than that of the untreated PtNi/G catalyst. Sulfuric acid treatment controlled catalyst particle size and increased the electrocatalytic activity of ethanol oxidation.

Comparative Life Cycle Assessment of Energy Consumption, Pollutant Emission, and Cost Analysis of Coal/Oil/Biomass to Ethylene Glycol

Simin Xu et al.

Summary: This study compares the life cycle energy consumption, pollutant emissions, and life cycle costs of CtEG, OtEG, and BtEG routes using life cycle assessment (LCA). The results show that ethylene glycol production process is the main contributor to energy consumption and pollutant emissions, with BtEG route having lower environmental costs but higher production costs compared to OtEG route. CtEG route is seen as a viable alternative for coal-rich and oil-deficient countries.
