Optical properties of glasses and glass-ceramics for optical amplifiers, photovoltaic devices, color displays, optical limiters, and Random Lasers

Cid B. de Araujo et al.

Summary: A review of recent works on glasses and glass-ceramics with characteristics suitable for use in optical devices is presented. The study focuses on germanate and tellurite glasses doped with rare-earth ions and subjected to proper heat treatment. The enhanced performance of Nd3+-doped GeO2-PbO glasses as optical amplifiers with the addition of Al2O3 is discussed, along with the potential use of Eu3+-doped GeO2-PbO glasses with TiO2 nanoparticles as a cover layer for silicon solar cells. The characterization of Nd3+-doped TeO2-ZnO glasses as a promising medium for random lasers is demonstrated, while the B2O3-CaF2 glass-ceramics with CaF2 nanocrystals, Pr3+ ions, and silver nanoparticles are shown to exhibit enhanced energy-transfer processes, making them suitable for tunable color displays. Finally, the synthesis and spectroscopic properties of TeO2-Ba(PO3)2 glass and glass-ceramics and their application as optical limiters are discussed.

Femtosecond nonlinear refraction of 2D semi-metallic redox exfoliated ZrTe2 at 800nm

Melissa Maldonado et al.

Summary: Zirconium telluride, a transition metal dichalcogenide, was synthesized using a redox exfoliated method to obtain a 2D monolayer semi-metal. Its third-order nonlinear optical properties were studied using the Z-scan technique in the femtosecond regime at 800nm, revealing a positive value of the nonlinear refractive index coefficient.

Fifth-order optical nonlinear response of semiconducting 2D LTMD MoS2

Manoel L. Silva-Neto et al.

Summary: The effective fifth-order susceptibility of two-dimensional semiconducting layered transition metal dichalcogenide molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) was reported for the first time, showing nonlinear behavior, while tungsten disulfide (WS2) only exhibited third-order nonlinear effect. Nonlinear absorption was not observed in either MoS2 or WS2.

Thermal and non-thermal intensity dependent optical nonlinearities in ethanol at 800 nm, 1480 nm, and 1560 nm

Jessica E. Q. Bautista et al.

Summary: Through experiments and theoretical calculations, the origin of the nonlinear optical response of a photon beam in different optical excitation regimes was determined, with corresponding values of the nonlinear refractive index obtained. The study results clarify some misinterpreted cases in the literature and provide additional nonlinear refraction data at different wavelengths.
