Could road constructions be more hazardous than an earthquake in terms of mass movement?

Hakan Tanyas et al.

Summary: Road construction has a significant impact on the frequency of mass wasting events in mountainous areas. This study monitored the development of a road network in Arhavi, Turkey for 11 years and assessed its effect on mass movements. The findings show that human-induced mass movements generate a larger sediment load than naturally occurring landslides, leading to river channel aggregation and increased flood risk.

Three decades of landslide activity in western Nepal: new insights into trends and climate drivers

A. Munoz-Torrero Manchado et al.

Summary: Recent studies in Far-Western Nepal suggest a strong correlation between monsoon precipitation and shallow landslides, with anthropogenic factors amplifying this relationship. Despite the reported increase in landslide disasters, there is no long-term trend in landslide activity, indicating that the main driver of landslides in this region is increasing exposure of people and infrastructure rather than climate change.

Complex causes of landslides after ice sheet retreat: Post-LGM mass movements in the Northern Patagonian Icefield region

Tomas Panek et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of landslides in a large deglaciated area within the Northern Patagonian Icefield, revealing that deep-seated landslides tend to cluster along the eastern edge of the Andes. The research suggests that geological conditions and paraglacial effects are the main factors influencing the distribution and types of landslides, with local clusters of large landslides originating from specific post-glacial landscape evolution.

Summary: This research proposes a novel strategy for training convolutional neural networks (CNN) by combining inventories from different regions to build a generalized model that can be directly applied to new, unexplored areas. The study demonstrates that CNNs trained on combined inventories have better generalization performance when mapping landslides in new unseen regions.

Temporal Variations in Landslide Distributions Following Extreme Events: Implications for Landslide Susceptibility Modeling

J. N. Jones et al.

Summary: This study quantified the spatial distribution variations of monsoon-triggered landslides in Nepal over different years, finding significant changes in landslide distribution in years affected by extreme events such as storms, earthquakes, and floods. Developing susceptibility models using more than 6-8 years of landslide data showed consistently good accuracy in hindcasting landslide occurrence.

Summary: The study found that soil erosion is a serious issue in the South-Kivu highlands, with significant differences in erosion rates between seasons due to variations in natural factors and management conditions. Implementation of erosion control strategies is urgently needed based on the high measured erosion rates.

Summary: This study used Pu-239(+240) to assess soil redistribution in two cropland sites and three pristine forest sites in tropical Africa. The results showed severe soil erosion and sedimentation on cropland, while pristine forests showed no indication of soil redistribution. The study highlights the importance of monitoring soil redistribution dynamics in response to increasing food demand in the region.

Characteristics and Distribution of Landslides in the Populated Hillslopes of Bujumbura, Burundi

Desire Kubwimana et al.

Summary: Accurate and detailed multitemporal inventories of landslides are crucial for evaluating landslide hazards in densely-populated mountainous regions. In the hillslopes of Bujumbura, more than 1200 landslides were inventoried, with over 20% of the slopes affected. Recent landslides are mainly shallow, triggered by rainfall on steep slopes. The study provides insights for land management and disaster risk reduction strategies.

Summary: Deforestation leads to increased landslide activity in the short term, but the interaction of geological and geomorphological processes affects landslide erosion rates in the long term. Landslide erosion rates in deforested areas are significantly higher compared to forested terrains.

Root Reinforcement in Slope Stability Models: A Review

Elena Benedetta Masi et al.

Summary: The paper reviews research on root reinforcement published between 2015 and 2020, focusing on approaches for estimating root reinforcement distribution, new slope stability models incorporating root reinforcement, and the impact of specific plant species, forest management, among other factors on root reinforcement. Despite the growing attention towards including root reinforcement in slope stability analysis, challenges remain in integrating it into regional models, with future research directions pointing towards studying the effects of soil moisture gradient and wildfires on root strength.
