The Big Data Paradox in Clinical Practice

Pavlos Msaouel

Summary: The big data paradox refers to the decrease in the probability of including the truth in confidence intervals as the number of patients in a study increases. This phenomenon occurs in observational and experimental studies, including clinical trials, and clinicians should consider it when interpreting research data. To mitigate the paradox, strategies such as improving data quality, anticipating patient heterogeneity, and including systematic error in error interval estimation can be employed.

The PDF4LHC21 combination of global PDF fits for the LHC Run III*

Richard D. Ball et al.

Summary: This article presents an updated global PDF fit, PDF4LHC21, which combines the CT18, MSHT20, and NNPDF3.1 sets using Monte Carlo methods. The new combination shows modest uncertainties reduction for key LHC processes compared to its predecessor, PDF4LHC15. Extensive benchmark studies are performed to understand the differences between the three global PDF sets. The phenomenological implications of PDF4LHC21 for a selection of cross sections at the LHC are also studied.

Evidence for intrinsic charm quarks in the proton

Richard D. Ball et al.

Summary: This study provides evidence for the existence of intrinsic charm in the proton by utilizing a high-precision determination of the quark-gluon content of the nucleon based on machine learning and a large experimental dataset. The findings confirm the presence of intrinsic charm at a 3-standard-deviation level, with a momentum distribution in remarkable agreement with model predictions.

Science Requirements and Detector Concepts for the Electron-Ion Collider

R. Abdul Khalek et al.

Summary: This report describes the physics case, detector requirements, and evolving detector concepts for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) experimental program. The EIC will be a new facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to regions dominated by gluons. The use of polarized beams in the EIC will allow for unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of particles. The report aims to advance the physics program and develop detector concepts that meet the requirements for the EIC.

Determination of the parton distribution functions of the proton using diverse ATLAS data from pp collisions at √s=7, 8 and 13 TeV

G. Aad et al.

Summary: This paper presents a study that determines a new set of proton parton distribution functions using measurements from the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider and deep inelastic scattering data from the HERA collider. The analysis is done at next-to-next-to-leading order in the theory of quantum chromodynamics and considers various measurements in pp collisions as well as ep collisions. The resulting set of parton distribution functions is named ATLASpdf21.

Summary: We present NNPDF4.0, a new set of parton distribution functions (PDFs) based on a global dataset and machine learning techniques. The methodology includes the expansion of the dataset, optimization of hyperparameters, and the implementation of theoretical improvements. The results have been validated through closure tests and analyzed for their dependence on input choices. The implications of NNPDF4.0 on LHC processes have also been studied.

Correlation and combination of sets of parton distributions

Richard D. Ball et al.

Summary: The study focused on the correlation between different sets of parton distributions (PDFs), showing that the correlations are not solely determined by the underlying data and can be used to assess the efficiency of PDF determination methodologies. It was also found that using data-driven correlations for combining different PDFs into a joint set can lead to inconsistent results, highlighting the statistical combination used in constructing the widely used PDF4LHC15 PDF set as the most reliable method.

Parton distributions from LHC, HERA, Tevatron and fixed target data: MSHT20 PDFs

S. Bailey et al.

Summary: The new MSHT20 set of parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton, determined from global analyses of hard scattering data, includes updates such as improved parameterizations, new precise data, and NNLO QCD corrections. The NNLO fit is strongly favored over the NLO due to wider range and increased precision of data included in the fit, resulting in reduced uncertainties in predictions for processes such as Higgs, top quark pair, and W, Z production at post LHC Run-II energies.

t(t)over-barH production at NNLO: the flavour off-diagonal channels

Stefano Catani et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the QCD radiative corrections for the associated production of a heavy-quark pair with a generic colorless system at hadron colliders. The resummation formalism for the production of the heavy-quark pair system at small values of its total transverse momentum is discussed, and the results of the corresponding resummation coefficients at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading order are presented. The perturbative expansion of the resummation formula provides explicit ingredients for applying the q(T) subtraction formalism to fixed-order calculations, and a fully differential perturbative computation is performed for top-antitop quark pair and Higgs boson production, showing agreement with established subtraction methods. Also, results for the flavor off-diagonal partonic channels at the next-to-next-to-leading order are presented for the first time.

Testing momentum dependence of the nonperturbative hadron structure in a global QCD analysis

Aurore Courtoy et al.

Summary: Analytic functional forms for parton distribution functions (PDFs) cannot be uniquely determined solely based on discrete experimental measurements due to a mathematical property of mimicry of PDF parametrizations. Instead, predictions of nonperturbative QCD approaches for the x dependence of PDFs should be cast in a form that enables decisive comparisons against experimental measurements. Effective power laws of (1 - x) dependence of PDFs may play a key role in these comparisons.

New CTEQ global analysis of quantum chromodynamics with high-precision data from the LHC

Tie-Jiun Hou et al.

Summary: The new parton distribution functions (PDFs) from the CTEQ-TEA collaboration are determined using a wide variety of high-precision Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data, in addition to other datasets. These PDFs are analyzed at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order, with error sets determined using the Hessian method. The data sensitivity and preference towards quantities such as α(s)(m(Z)), and the gluon and strange quark distributions are quantified using fast PDF survey techniques.
