Proactive infection prevention and control measures are highly encouraged in healthcare settings.

Healthcare workers' compliance and its potential determinants to prevent COVID-19 in public hospitals in Western Ethiopia

Summary: This study revealed that the overall compliance of healthcare workers in public hospitals in Western Ethiopia with COVID-19 preventive measures is only 22%. Factors such as work characteristics, training, reading materials, and support from hospital management were found to be significantly associated with compliance. Inadequate supplies of personal protective equipment, supportive medications, and ventilation were commonly cited barriers to COVID-19 prevention among participants.

Summary: The study found that factors contributing to increased COVID-19 infection among HCWs in Nigeria included poor knowledge of IPC measures for COVID-19, inadequate supply of PPE, poor political will and inadequate health facilities management support. To reduce the risk for COVID-19 infection among HCWs, improved political will and better involvement of health facilities management teams in infection prevention and control systems are needed, along with scale-up training on IPC measures and the development of effective points of care risk assessment.
