Acidification impacts on the molecular composition of dissolved organic matter revealed by FT-ICR MS

Huixia Han et al.

Summary: The study found that after acidification, the quantity and intensity of aromatic compounds with high oxygen content in soil, seawater, and atmospheric aerosol samples were significantly enhanced, while highly saturated compounds were reduced or absent. The effect of acidification on the molecular composition of DOM depends on the original environmental media of the samples.

A review of secondary organic aerosols formation focusing on organosulfates and organic nitrates

Wulve Fan et al.

Summary: Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) are an important component of fine particulate matter, with significant impacts on human health, air quality, and climate change. Organosulfates (OSs) and organic nitrates (ON) are key contributors to SOA formation, and their formation mechanisms are complex. Further research is needed to comprehensively understand the formation of SOA, particularly the contributions of OSs and ON.

Secondary organic aerosol formed by condensing anthropogenic vapours over China's megacities

Wei Nie et al.

Summary: The formation of secondary organic aerosol in Chinese megacities is primarily driven by the condensation of anthropogenic organic vapours, specifically low-volatility organic vapours. The irreversible condensation of these anthropogenic oxygenated organic molecules significantly contributes to the production of secondary organic aerosols. Coordinated measurements across different urbanized regions in China indicate that the distribution and formation pathways of oxygenated organic molecules are similar, suggesting that uniform mitigation strategies could be effective in addressing air pollution issues in these highly populated city clusters.

Source and formation process impact the chemodiversity of rainwater dissolved organic matter along the Yangtze River Basin in summer

Shuang Chen et al.

Summary: The study reveals the sources and molecular composition of rainwater dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Yangtze River Basin using fluorescence and mass spectrometry techniques. The results show that biogenic volatile organic compounds, atmospheric transport, biomass burning, and industrial emissions contribute to rainwater DOM composition. More than 70% of rainwater DOM molecules are associated with 36 transformation mechanisms during rainwater-scavenging processes.

Qiaorong Xie et al.

Summary: Organosulfates (OSs) are important components of secondary organic aerosols in ambient air. This study identified the stable carbon and sulfur isotopic compositions of OSs in urban aerosols using ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry. It discovered the carbon chain structure and relative abundance of C-13 and S-34 isotopic OSs. The study also estimated the carbon and sulfur isotopic ratios of these OSs.

Sihui Su et al.

Summary: The chemical composition of dissolved organic sulfur in snow was analyzed using high-resolution mass spectrometry. A new classification method was developed to distinguish sulfur-containing molecules with different oxidation levels. The molecular characterization of organic sulfur species in snow samples provided new insights into the compositions of these species in ambient air.

Brown carbon from biomass burning imposes strong circum-Arctic warming

Siyao Yue et al.

Summary: Rapid warming in the Arctic has significant global environmental impacts. Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) is a poorly understood and uncertain greenhouse gas due to limited observations. Through direct observations and modeling, this study finds that BrC, mainly originating from biomass burning in the mid-to-high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, acts as a strong warming agent in the Arctic region, particularly in summer.

Measurement report: Optical properties and sources of water-soluble brown carbon in Tianjin, North China insights from organic molecular compositions

Junjun Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the light absorption and fluorescence properties of water-soluble brown carbon (BrC) in the atmosphere of urban Tianjin in northern China. The research reveals seasonal variations in the light absorption properties of BrC, with stronger absorption in winter. It also identifies the sources of BrC, including fossil fuel combustion, primary bioaerosol emission, biomass burning, and biogenic and anthropogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation.

Molecular Distributions of Diacids, Oxoacids, and α-Dicarbonyls in Summer- and Winter-Time Fine Aerosols From Tianjin, North China: Emissions From Combustion Sources and Aqueous Phase Secondary Formation

C. M. Pavuluri et al.

Summary: The study reveals that diacids and related compounds in North China's organic aerosols primarily originate from coal combustion and biomass burning emissions, and are produced in the atmosphere through both in situ photochemical reactions and aging during long-range transport. Water-soluble organic carbon increases with rising concentrations of SO42-, implying that reducing NOx and SO2 emissions could potentially control the water-soluble OA loading in North China.

Chemical Synthesis of Multifunctional Air Pollutants: Terpene-Derived Nitrooxy Organosulfates

Yuchen Wang et al.

Summary: Nitrooxy organosulfates derived from terpenes (NOSTP) are important products formed between anthropogenic pollution and natural emissions, but quantification, formation, and transformation in atmospheric aerosols are hindered by the lack of standards. This work developed synthesis routes for eight NOSTP compounds and identified six synthesized NOSTP in ambient aerosol samples for the first time. Availability of authentic standards allowed observation of previously unrecognized transformation pathways in NOSTP formation.

Summary: This study used Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and light absorption measurements to characterize atmospheric dissolved organic matter (ADOM) in aerosol samples from Guangzhou, revealing the influence of environmental factors on the molecular composition and light absorption properties of BrC. Nitrogen-containing species played a key role in the variation of BrC light absorption. Meteorological conditions and anthropogenic activities were identified as the main drivers of BrC composition.
