Metagenomic analysis of microbial community and gene function of anodic biofilm for nonylphenol removal in microbial fuel cells

Yicheng Wu et al.

Summary: Dual-chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were used for the simultaneous degradation of nonylphenol and electricity generation. Metagenomic sequencing revealed the dominant microbial community and gene function in the anodic biofilm. The metabolic pathways of nonylphenol were suggested to be divided into the oxidation of aromatic ring and the fission of alkyl chain.

Microbial fuel cell for oilfield produced water treatment and reuse: Modelling and process optimization

Majid Mohammadi et al.

Summary: In this study, oilfield produced water was treated in a microbial fuel cell (MFC) using response surface methodology and central composite design (RSM/CCD) to optimize the process. The effects of two parameters, SPEEK and nanocomposite (CNT/Pt), on COD removal and power generation were discussed, with XRD, SEM, TEM, and NMR used for analysis. Results showed that under optimized conditions of DS=80 and CNT/Pt of 14 wt% CNT- 86 wt% Pt, the MFC could remove 92% of COD and generate 545 mW/m(2) of power density.

Manas Barik et al.

Summary: A phenol-degrading actinomycetes strain, identified as Rhodococcus pyridinivorans PDB9TN-1, was isolated from paper pulp wastewater in this study. The strain was capable of completely degrading 1600 mg/L of phenol within 56 hours and removing over 97.5% of total organic carbon (TOC) at an initial phenol concentration of 1000 mg/L.

Combined microbial transcript and metabolic analysis reveals the different roles of hydrochar and biochar in promoting anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Zhijian Shi et al.

Summary: The study found that hydrochar outperformed biochar in enhancing anaerobic digestion of hydrothermal pretreated waste activated sludge, especially HC2, due to its higher methane yield and production rate. Both hydrochar and biochar facilitated protein utilization and enriched different microbes involved in protein degradation, leading to increased methane production. Metabolomic analysis revealed that hydrochar and biochar induced significant changes in metabolites related to fatty acids and amino acids metabolism, showing rapid conversion of intermediate products and microbial community structure alignment.

Copper removal and microbial community analysis in a single medium sediment microbial fuel cell

Shu-Hui Liu et al.

Summary: The study developed a single-medium, membraneless microbial fuel cell to investigate Cu(II) migration in sediment, showing that a biocathode can enhance Cu(II) electromigration efficiency, and optimizing cathode conditions can improve Cu(II) removal efficiency. Additionally, dominant bacteria phyla capable of degrading organic matter, generating electricity, and tolerating Cu(II) were discovered in the system.

In-situ alkaline pretreatment of waste activated sludge in microbial fuel cell enhanced power production

Yi-Kun Geng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the alkaline MFC has excellent electricity generation performance, with high voltage output (0.74 V) and high power density (0.65 W m(-2)). Moreover, the total removal rate of chemical oxygen demand in WAS is over 40%. No greenhouse gases (CH4 and CO2) are emitted from the alkaline MFC with WAS as the power source. The enhanced electricity generation performance in the alkaline MFC is attributed to factors such as internal resistance, degradation of soluble organics, and shift of microbial community.

Genome-Centric Metatranscriptomics Analysis Reveals the Role of Hydrochar in Anaerobic Digestion of Waste Activated Sludge

Zhijian Shi et al.

Summary: Hydrochar was found to significantly increase methane production rate and yield of waste activated sludge by enhancing acidification and methanogenesis processes. Metagenome-assembled genomes enriched by hydrochar were identified to be involved in direct interspecies electron transfer, contributing to the enhanced methane yield. Additionally, specific microorganisms related to organics degradation were also found to potentially play a role in the increased methane yield.

Biological detoxification and decolorization enhancement of azo dye by introducing natural electron mediators in MFCs

Tao Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that adding anthraquinone-rich extract from Rheum offcinale Baill significantly improves the decolorization efficiency of RR2 in MFCs, enhances microbial activity, improves microbial diversity, and reduces internal resistance. The results indicate that the Rheum extract acts as an antidote to alleviate the biotoxicity of RR2. This study provides a new strategy for using plant-source electron mediators to enhance biological detoxification, bioelectricity generation, and dye decolorization in bioelectrochemical systems.
