Association between short-term ambient air pollution and outpatient visits for acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Lanzhou, 2013-19

Jiyuan Dong et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between air pollution and outpatient visits for acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) using a time-series study. The results showed that the increase in PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and NO2 concentrations was associated with an increase in AECOPD outpatient visits. The association varied by gender, age, and season.

Summary: This ecological study suggests that short-term exposure to PM increases the risk for hospital admission for respiratory diseases, even at low concentrations. These findings suggest that reducing atmospheric PM concentrations may reduce hospital admissions for respiratory diseases.

Association Between Air Pollutants and Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Time Stratified Case-Crossover Design With a Distributed Lag Nonlinear Model

Yanchen Liu et al.

Summary: Acute exacerbation of chronic obstruction pulmonary disease (AECOPD), which is a respiratory disease, is considered to be associated with air pollution. However, there is still insufficient evidence regarding the effects of air pollution on the incidence of AECOPD and whether it varies among different population groups. This study examined the associations between air pollution and AECOPD using data on PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2, CO, and O-3, as well as daily AECOPD admission data in rural areas of Qingyang, northwestern China. The results showed that exposure to high levels of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and CO, as well as low levels of NO2, increased the risk of AECOPD. Females aged 15-64 were more vulnerable to extreme concentrations of PM2.5, SO2, CO, and low levels of PM10. Adults aged 15-64 were more sensitive to extreme concentrations of NO2 compared to elderly individuals aged 65 years and above, while the latter were more sensitive to high levels of PM10. High levels of SO2, NO2, and extreme concentrations of PM2.5 had the greatest effects on the day of exposure, while low levels of SO2 and CO had delayed effects on AECOPD. Precautionary measures should be taken to control hospitalization for AECOPD associated with air pollutants, with a focus on vulnerable subgroups.

Individual exposure to ambient PM2.5 and hospital admissions for COPD in 110 hospitals: a case-crossover study in Guangzhou, China

Jie-Qi Jin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the short-term effects of PM2.5 on hospital admissions for COPD in Guangzhou, China, based on individual-level exposure data. An increase in individual-level PM2.5 was associated with a higher risk of hospitalization for COPD, especially among males and patients admitted in summer. The study strengthened the evidence for the adverse effects of PM2.5 on COPD based on satellite-derived estimates.

Reduction in daily ambient PM2.5 pollution and potential life gain by attaining WHO air quality guidelines in Tehran

Zhouxin Yin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the potential benefits in life expectancy in Tehran, Iran by meeting daily PM2.5 standards. The findings showed that short-term exposure to PM2.5 is associated with increased non-accidental years of life lost and mortality. Prolonged life expectancy could be achieved by keeping the particulate matter air pollution level under a stricter standard.

Summary: This study examines the association between ambient heat exposure and COPD hospitalizations in England. The findings show that there is a link between higher temperatures and increased risk of COPD hospitalizations. The study also highlights the importance of considering individual and contextual characteristics in understanding population vulnerabilities to heat-related COPD hospitalizations.

Burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and its attributable risk factors in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2019: results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Saeid Safiri et al.

Summary: This study reports the global, regional, and national burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and its risk factors from 1990 to 2019. The findings indicate that although the burden of COPD has decreased, it still remains a significant public health problem worldwide. Preventive measures should focus on smoking cessation, improving air quality, and reducing occupational exposure to further reduce the burden of COPD.

Climate-mediated air pollution associated with COPD severity

Summary: Air pollution, mediated by climate, has been found to have negative effects on the health outcomes of COPD patients. This study investigated the associations between air pollution, temperature, relative humidity, and various health indicators of COPD patients. The findings suggest that air pollution, especially PM2.5 and NO2, plays a mediating role in the relationships between climate factors and health outcomes.

The effect of nitrogen dioxide and atmospheric pressure on hospitalization risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Guangzhou, China

Weibin She et al.

Summary: The study found a non-linear relationship between NO2 and COPD incidence, with an approximate M shape, peaking at 126 μg/m³ (RR = 1.32, 95% CI, 1.07 to 1.64) and 168 μg/m³ (RR = 1.21, 95% CI, 0.94 to 1.55), respectively. The association between atmospheric pressure and COPD incidence exhibited an approximate J shape with a peak at 1035 hPa (RR = 1.16, 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.31). This implies the potential for establishing an early warning system for COPD and reducing the disease burden.
