Enhanced removal of fluoroquinolone antibiotics by peroxydisulfate activated with N-doped sludge biochar: Performance, mechanism and toxicity evaluation

Zhihuang Fang et al.

Summary: N-modified sludge-derived biochar (N-SDBC) was prepared and used for the activation of peroxydisulfate (PDS) to degrade fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs). Seven commonly used FQs were effectively degraded by N-SDBC/PDS, and the dominant reactive species were identified as O-1(2), while SO4 center dot- and (OH)-O-center dot played minor roles. Graphite-N and Fe-0 on the surface of N-SDBC were identified as the main active sites for PDS activation. The application in surface water and wastewater samples demonstrated the efficiency of N-SDBC/PDS for FQs removal.

Efficient removal of norfloxacin using nano zerovalent cerium composite biochar-catalyzed peroxydisulfate

Jibran Iqbal et al.

Summary: Norfloxacin (NOR), an important antibiotic used for the treatment of various infections, is known to cause significant water pollution and environmental issues. In this study, a composite of biochar from Phoenix dactylifera roots biomass (PB) and mesoporous nano-zerovalent cerium (nZVCe) was used successfully to remove NOR from solutions. The composite showed improved catalytic efficiency and physiological characteristics compared to individual PB. The use of peroxydisulfate (PDS) further enhanced the removal of NOR, and scavengers inhibited NOR degradation. The study demonstrates the potential practical applications of the composite in treating NOR-contaminated water.

Fan Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, nitrogen self-doping layered graphitic biochar (Na-BC900) was prepared by catalytic pyrolysis of lotus leaves at 900 degrees C, in the presence of NaCl catalyst, for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. The catalytic strategy was found to be scalable and could be applied to produce multiple biomass-based biochar catalysts for restoration of polluted water bodies.
