Embedded PZT aggregates for monitoring crack growth and predicting surface crack in reinforced concrete beam

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to monitor the cracks growth process of reinforced concrete beam using embedded piezoelectric aggregates. A damage index is introduced to estimate the crack damage degree in concrete structure. The reinforced concrete beam is loaded stepwise and divided into three areas. Piezoelectric aggregates are embedded into the specimen to monitor each area. The results show that the proposed damage index enables dynamic monitoring, damage evaluation, and forecasting of surface crack occurrence and collapse warning of the structure. The method is verified using high-speed camera and image processing technique.

Design of a Novel Trabecular Acetabular Cup and Selective Laser Melting Fabrication

Congyu Wang et al.

Summary: The study explores the use of selective laser melting technology to manufacture porous acetabular cups, aiming to prevent stress shielding and subsequent aseptic loosening of total hip replacements. By designing porous structures with different porosity, the mechanical requirements are met while resembling the natural structure of human bone.

Minimizing Risk of Failure from Ceramic-on-Ceramic Total Hip Prosthesis by Selecting Ceramic Materials Based on Tresca Stress

Muhammad Imam Ammarullah et al.

Summary: The choice of ceramic-on-ceramic coupling in total hip prosthesis offers advantages such as high hardness, scratch resistance, low wear rate, and improved lubrication performance compared to other material combinations. Selecting ceramic materials for such coupling reduces the risk of postoperative failure. This study analyzed commonly used ceramic materials (zirconium dioxide, silicon nitride, and aluminium oxide) for ceramic-on-ceramic coupling and evaluated their stress distribution using a finite element-based computational model. The results showed that using ZrO2-on-ZrO2 coupling reduced Tresca stress by 17.34% compared to Si3N4-on-Si3N4 and Al2O3-on-Al2O3 couplings, which resulted in a 27.23% reduction in Tresca stress.

Hydration, reinforcing mechanism, and macro performance of multi-layer graphene-modified cement composites

Kai Cui et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of multi-layer graphene (MLG) on the hydration, microstructure, and mechanical properties of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) prepared with sulphoaluminate cement. The results show that adding MLG can significantly enhance the macro performance of UHPC, improving its flexural strength and compressive strength at different curing times. The study also reveals the reinforcing mechanism of MLG, which includes filling pores and preventing micro-crack extension.

The combined effect of policy changes and the covid-19 pandemic on the same day discharge and complications following total hip arthroplasty: a nationwide analysis

Adam M. Gordon et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 led to a significant decline in elective total hip arthroplasty (THA) cases and a notable increase in outpatient THA surgeries. The average length of stay in 2020 was significantly shorter compared to 2019, with a rising trend in same day discharge rates. Despite changes in surgical settings and discharge patterns, the overall complication rates remained stable between 2019 and 2020.

Basilio De la Torre et al.

Summary: A study using finite element analysis compared the wear risk of cemented and uncemented polyethylene liners in total hip arthroplasty, finding that cemented liners had a lower risk. Other variables such as acetabular fixation, polyethylene thickness, and positioning also significantly affected wear risk.

Impact and Strategies on Joint Surgery Centers without Lockdowns during the Peak of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study

Chia-Hao Hsu et al.

Summary: The real psychological impact of COVID-19 is hard to quantify and varies between hospital sizes and levels. Taiwan's successful response to the virus without implementing lockdowns until May 2021 sets it apart. Patients' fear played a major role in the reduction of surgeries, particularly total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The global pandemic inevitably led to a reduction of around 60% in total TKA operations, despite the absence of local epidemics and restrictions in Taiwan.

Summary: The study showed that adding dimples can reduce contact pressure and wear in total hip arthroplasty, with ball type dimples having the best ability to reduce wear compared to other types, reducing wear by 24.3% to 31% compared to no dimples. This indicates that surface texturing with appropriate dimple bottom geometry can extend the lifetime of hip implants.
