Metrics and epistemic injustice

Summary: This paper examines the socio-political affordances of metrics in research evaluation and the consequences of epistemic injustice in research practices and recorded knowledge. The findings show that the use of metrics is largely driven by competition, and this competition reproduces systemic inequalities and leads to epistemic injustice. The paper argues that metrics-induced competition is counterproductive to equality and diversity in research practices.

Who is to blame? Evaluations in academia spreading through relationships among multiple actor types

Summary: We analyze the dynamics of evaluation in contemporary academia, considering various actors involved, such as regulators, market actors, scrutinizers, and internal initiatives within universities. Regulators demand evaluations to assess fund utilization, while market actors push for different metrics such as citation scores and impact factors. Scrutinizers contribute by developing rankings, accounting systems, and investigative reports. Internal evaluations are also conducted voluntarily, involving academic leaders and researchers assisting in the evaluation process. We conclude that multiple actors are responsible for the increasing number of evaluations in academia.
