Sex-based disparities in outcome in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a Children's Oncology Group report

Sumit Gupta et al.

Summary: Boys with acute lymphoblastic leukemia continue to have lower survival rates compared to girls. This study found that the sex-based disparities still exist in contemporary therapy, with boys experiencing inferior event-free survival and overall survival, primarily due to higher rates of relapse, particularly involving the central nervous system.

An Ensemble Learning Framework for Detecting Protein Complexes From PPI Networks

Rongquan Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an Ensemble Learning Framework (ELF-DPC) for detecting protein complexes within protein-protein interaction networks. The framework constructs a weighted PPI network by combining topological and biological information, mines protein complex cores using a designed strategy, and obtains an ensemble learning model by integrating structural modularity and a trained voting regressor model. Experimental results show that ELF-DPC outperforms state-of-the-art approaches and can detect biologically meaningful protein complexes.

Prognostic significance of CNSL at diagnosis of childhood B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia: A report from the South China Children's Leukemia Group

Lu-Hong Xu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the prognostic impact of central nervous system leukemia (CNSL) at diagnosis in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients. The findings showed that patients with CNSL at diagnosis had higher leukocyte count and poorer treatment response. Additionally, CNSL status was associated with worse 3-year event-free survival and a higher risk of relapse.

Cerebrospinal Fluid Biomarkers in Childhood Leukemias

Chrysanthy Ikonomidou

Summary: In childhood leukemia, the involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) is a major cause of treatment failures. Analysis of cerebrospinal fluid is crucial for detecting CNS leukemia. Treatments for childhood leukemia can adversely affect the developing brain, leading to neurocognitive deficits. This review highlights the utility of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers in tracking both CNS disease and neurotoxicity of treatments in childhood leukemias.

CNS-3 status remains an independent adverse prognosis factor in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) treated without cranial irradiation: Results of EORTC Children Leukemia Group study 58951

N. Sirvent et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prognostic significance of initial CNS involvement in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It found that CNS-3 status remains associated with poor prognosis, highlighting the need for intensification of both systemic and CNS-directed therapy during treatment.
