A new tannin compound named 4-(4,5-dihydroxy-3-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzoyloxy)-6-(hydroxymethyl)-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yloxy)-3-methoxybenzoic acid (1) was isolated from the whole herb of the mangrove plant of Acanthus ilicifolius, along with three known compounds, vanillic acid (2), syringate (3), and acteoside (4). Their structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic analyses (IR, Q-TOF MS, 1D and 2D NMR) and comparison with reported data. Compound 1 was evaluated for its cytotoxic activity using the MTT method.
