The QCD phase transition behind a PBH origin of LIGO/Virgo events?

Joaquim Iguaz et al.

Summary: The best-motivated scenario for a sizable primordial black hole (PBH) contribution to the LIGO/Virgo binary black hole mergers is the QCD phase transition, but it is not viable unless an ad hoc mass evolution and a cutoff in power-spectrum are introduced.

Cosmic radiation backgrounds from primordial black holes

F. Ziparo et al.

Summary: Recent measurements show signals in excess of those expected from known sources in the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) and cosmic radio background (CRB), suggesting the presence of an undiscovered population of emitters. Researchers propose a new model to predict X-ray and radio emission from primordial black holes (PBHs) accreting gas. They find that most of the emission comes from PBHs in dark matter mini-haloes at early epochs.

Cosmic conundra explained by thermal history and primordial black holes

Bernard Carr et al.

Summary: A study suggests that the formation of primordial black holes (PBHs) in the early Universe may be linked to a sudden drop in relativistic matter pressure, offering a potential explanation for phenomena like dark matter and black hole mergers. The new model predicts that LIGO/Virgo will observe black hole mergers within specific mass ranges, in line with recent detections.

Consistency of Primordial Black Hole Dark Matter with LIGO/Virgo Merger Rates

Karsten Jedamzik

Summary: By studying the merger rates and mass distribution of primordial black holes, it was found that two different scenarios can explain the observed rate of heavy BH mergers by LIGO/Virgo, but cannot yet explain the rate of mass-asymmetric events.

GW190521 Mass Gap Event and the Primordial Black Hole Scenario

V De Luca et al.

Summary: The LIGO/Virgo Collaboration observed GW190521, the first binary black hole merger with the primary component mass in the mass gap predicted by the pair-instability supernova theory, disfavoring the standard stellar-origin formation scenario for the heavier black hole. The study shows that GW190521 cannot be explained within the primordial black hole scenario if PBHs do not accrete during their cosmological evolution, but may have a primordial origin if PBHs accrete efficiently before the reionization epoch.

GWTC-2: Compact Binary Coalescences Observed by LIGO and Virgo during the First Half of the Third Observing Run

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: This report presents 39 candidate gravitational-wave events detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo during the first half of the third observing run (O3a) between April 1, 2019 and October 1, 2019. The events include black hole binary mergers up to a redshift of approximately 0.8 and events where the components cannot be unambiguously identified. The range of candidate event masses has expanded compared to previous catalogs, with the inclusion of binary systems with asymmetric mass ratios.

Multiwavelength detectability of isolated black holes in the Milky Way

Francesca Scarcella et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive analysis on the detectability of isolated black holes in our Galaxy, focusing on their accretion from interstellar gas and discussing the impact of astrophysical uncertainties on predicting the number of observable sources. Future developments in radio astronomy, particularly the potential of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) in detecting a population of astrophysical black holes accreting gas in our Galaxy, are also considered.

Constraining the primordial black hole scenario with Bayesian inference and machine learning: The GWTC-2 gravitational wave catalog

Kaze W. K. Wong et al.

Summary: Using the GWTC-2 dataset from the LIGO-Virgo Collaboration, researchers investigated whether all black hole mergers observed so far are of primordial origin. They constrained primordial black hole formation models and found that PBHs may only comprise a fraction smaller than 0.3% of the total dark matter, with their predicted abundance still being compatible with other constraints.
