First Investigation of Nonlinear Optical Oxychalcogenide with Three-Dimensional Anionic Framework and Special Windmill-Like Functional Motifs†

Jia-Nuo Li et al.

Summary: Oxychalcogenides have attracted much attention as nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. However, their low dimensional structures limit their application. In this study, a new oxysulfide K2Ba0.5Ga9O2S13 with a three-dimensional polyanionic framework was synthesized. It exhibits a wide band gap, high laser-induced damage threshold, and moderate phase-matchable NLO response at specific wavelengths.

From oxides to oxysulfides: the mixed-anion GeS3O unit induces huge improvement in the nonlinear optical effect and optical anisotropy for potential nonlinear optical materials

Xinyu Tian et al.

Summary: This article proposes oxysulfides as potential infrared (IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials that combine the performance advantages of sulfides and oxides. The study shows that GeS3O units in oxysulfides exhibit stronger polarizability anisotropy and hyperpolarizability compared to typical GeO4 units. The research also demonstrates that the mixed-anion GeS3O ligand is a useful NLO-active unit that greatly influences the NLO origin. This provides a feasible design strategy and research system for exploring new IR NLO candidates.

Metal oxyhalides: an emerging family of nonlinear optical materials

Xinglong Chen et al.

Summary: Second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have attracted significant attention due to their crucial role in laser frequency conversion and other applications. The search for new NLO materials with high performance has been a focus of research for chemists and material scientists. Metal oxyhalides, especially those with d(0)/d(10) transition metals or heavy post-transition metals, show promise as interesting NLO materials. This review focuses on the design strategy, structural chemistry, NLO-related properties, and structure-property correlation of metal oxyhalides with large NLO responses. It provides insights for the rational design and future development of emerging metal oxyhalides for NLO and other applications.

Broad transparency and wide band gap achieved in a magnetic infrared nonlinear optical chalcogenide by suppressing d-d transitions

Bin-Wen Liu et al.

Summary: Magnetic infrared nonlinear optical materials, particularly those with d-block metals, have shown potential for large NLO efficiency. However, the d-d transitions in these materials lead to optical absorption and narrow band gaps, limiting their practical applications. The use of salt-inclusion systems provides an opportunity to modulate the crystal field and suppress the d-d transitions while maintaining NLO-active transitions. The newly developed salt-inclusion sulfide [K3Cl][Mn2Ga6S12] features a rare nanoporous framework, wide band gap, and broad transparency, meeting the criteria for an advanced infrared NLO material.
