Evaluation of the mycotoxin patulin on cytotoxicity and oxidative stress in human glioblastoma cells and investigation of protective effect of the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC)

Shu-Shong Hsu et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the cytotoxicity of patulin in DBTRG-05MG human glioblastoma cells through oxidative stress and evaluate the protective effect of the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) against patulin-induced cytotoxicity.

Selenium-EnrichedPediococcus acidilacticiMRS-7 Alleviates Patulin-Induced Jejunum Injuries in Mice and Its Possible Mechanisms

Hong Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the protective effects of a selenium-enriched strain, SeP, on jejunum injuries induced by PAT. The results showed that SeP could alleviate PAT-induced intestinal damage and inflammation, as well as regulate the intestinal microbiota. These findings suggest that SeP may serve as a novel protective agent against the toxicity of PAT.

Pediococcus acidilactici Promotes the Longevity of C. elegans by Regulating the Insulin/IGF-1 and JNK/MAPK Signaling, Fat Accumulation and Chloride Ion

Rui Hu et al.

Summary: This study found that the probiotic Pediococcus acidilactici (PA) from fermented pickles can extend the lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans by regulating insulin/IGF-1 and JNK/MAPK signaling, reducing fat accumulation, and decreasing reactive oxygen species levels. The key regulator of PA-mediated longevity was identified as nrfl-1, and chloride ion channel genes clh-1 and clh-4 were also found to play a role in lifespan extension.

Toxic effects of patulin on mouse oocytes and its possible mechanisms

Wen-Long Lei et al.

Summary: Patulin treatment inhibits mouse oocyte maturation and causes meiotic arrest by disrupting normal spindle assembly and chromosome alignment, which may be related to mitochondrial dysfunction. Increased oxidative stress and decreased mitochondrial membrane potential are also observed in patulin-treated oocytes.

The International Scientific Association of Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) consensus statement on the definition and scope of postbiotics

Seppo Salminen et al.

Summary: In 2019, ISAPP convened a panel of experts to review the definition and scope of postbiotics. The panel defined postbiotics as a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host. This definition aims to provide common ground for future activities in this area.

Critical Assessment of Mycotoxins in Beverages and Their Control Measures

Md. Shofiul Azam et al.

Summary: Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of filamentous fungi that contaminate a variety of food products, especially beverages, posing a serious risk to human health even at low concentrations. Major mycotoxins in beverages, such as aflatoxins and ochratoxin A, sometimes exceed regulatory limits. Strategies to control mycotoxin contamination include detection, quantification, and postharvest management.

Probiotics Interactions and the Modulation of Major Signalling Pathways in Host Model Organism Caenorhabditis elegans

Ramatchandirane Mahesh et al.

Summary: The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in maintaining health by influencing digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune system regulation. Caenorhabditis elegans is a well-suited model organism for probiotic research due to its feeding behavior on bacteria, allowing for faster investigations. The study highlights the importance of understanding probiotics regulation mechanisms in conserved signaling pathways and explores the future contributions of C. elegans in synthetic biology and probiotics engineering.
