Multi-Platform Omics Analysis Reveals Molecular Signatures for Pathogenesis and Activity of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Xiaolan Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular characteristics of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with different disease activity levels using a comprehensive multi-omics analysis. The results showed that the complement system and inflammatory response were activated in SLE patients and were associated with disease activity. Additionally, the immunoglobulin mediated immune response was activated in patients with low disease activity but slightly suppressed in patients with high disease activity. Imbalance in lipid metabolism, particularly sphingolipid metabolism, and dysregulated apolipoproteins were also observed to contribute to the disease activity of SLE.

Proteomic and Metabolomic Signatures Associated With the Immune Response in Healthy Individuals Immunized With an Inactivated SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine

Yi Wang et al.

Summary: This study used a systems biology approach to investigate the immune mechanisms of Sinovac's inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine. The results demonstrated that vaccination with Sinovac induced a comprehensive immune response including specific antibodies, humoral response, and activation of the innate immune system. Metabolites associated with immunity and specific metabolic pathways were also identified. Additionally, a multifactorial response network was constructed to analyze the interactions and compare the immune signatures and metabolic pathways affected by Sinovac vaccination and SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Improved liver lipid catabolism and utilization in growth hormone transgenic common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) through enhanced lipolytic and fatty acid β-oxidation pathways

Yunya Wu et al.

Summary: GH transgenic common carp exhibit improved growth rate and feed efficiency compared to wild-type carp. This study found that lipid metabolism, specifically lipolysis and fatty acid beta-oxidation, is enhanced in the liver of GH transgenic carp. These findings provide insights into enhancing lipid utilization in aquaculture fish species.

Evolution and control of the COVID-19 pandemic: A global perspective

Yuqu Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the COVID-19 pandemic is influenced by various factors, with urban population being the key factor. School closures, international travel restrictions, and public gathering restrictions are the most effective measures in controlling the epidemic. Implementing appropriate control measures in the first month of an outbreak plays a critical role in future pandemic trends.

Novel interaction of properdin and coagulation factor XI: Crosstalk between complement and coagulation

Samantha L. Heal et al.

Summary: This study discovered a novel interaction between the positive regulator of complement, properdin, and the intrinsic pathway of coagulation, resulting in functional consequences. It was found that properdin reduces the activity of autoactivated factor XIa towards S-2288 and can be cleaved by factor XIa in the presence of dextran sulfate. The researchers also demonstrated that the activation of factor X downstream of the cleavage of factor IX by factor XIa is modulated by properdin. These findings highlight a new intercommunication between the complement and coagulation pathways.

The lysosome as an imperative regulator of autophagy and cell death

Kewal Kumar Mahapatra et al.

Summary: Lysosomes are crucial organelles responsible for degrading cellular cargo and maintaining cellular homeostasis, playing a critical role in the connection between autophagy and endocytosis. Damage to the lysosomal membrane can lead to selective lysosomal degradation pathway and trigger lysophagy in severe cases.

Metabolic design for selective production of nicotinamide mononucleotide from glucose and nicotinamide

Shinichiro Shoji et al.

Summary: A whole-cell biocatalyst using Escherichia coli was developed for efficient production of Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) from inexpensive substrates glucose and nicotinamide, achieving high yields and selectivity. The approach identified functional transporters and key enzymes allowing for intracellular uptake, conversion, and extracellular excretion of NMN. This method shows promise for low-cost, high-quality industrial production of NMN and other nucleotide compounds using microorganisms.

Pneumonia

Antoni Torres et al.

Summary: Pneumonia is a common acute respiratory infection that affects individuals of all ages globally, causing high morbidity and mortality. It can be caused by various microorganisms, and timely identification of causative pathogens is crucial for effective treatment. New therapies and diagnostic tests are being developed to improve the management of pneumonia.

Targeting nucleotide metabolism as the nexus of viral infections, cancer, and the immune response

Yarden Ariav et al.

Summary: Virus-infected cells and cancers share metabolic commonalities in their insatiable need to replicate and evade the host immune system. They hijack signaling mechanisms to induce metabolic rewiring, up-regulate nucleotide metabolism, and suppress the immune response. Understanding the immune consequences of targeting nucleotide metabolism against cancers may optimize therapy against viral infections.

Arsheen Zeeshan et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the epidemiology and outcomes of 187 critically ill children with severe CAP admitted to the PICU in recent years. The results showed that severe illness on presentation, presence of systemic illness, and empyema were associated with increased mortality among children admitted to the PICU with severe CAP.
