Symptom networks in patients with substance use disorders

Ruud J. T. Rutten et al.

Summary: Through network analysis, we found that spending a substantial amount of time obtaining, using, or recovering from substance use is the most central symptom in SUD patients. Symptoms of giving up or cutting back on important activities because of use and repeated usage causing an inability to meet important obligations influence each other the most. Networks differ between substances in terms of global strength and structure, and there are moderate differences between networks based on DSM-5 criteria and DSM-IV criteria.
