Pyrolysis of end-of-life polystyrene in a pilot-scale reactor: Maximizing styrene production

Azd Zayoud et al.

Summary: Chemical recycling of polystyrene via pyrolysis has attracted great interest in both industry and academia. In this study, the pyrolysis of end-of-life polystyrene was investigated in a pilot-scale unit. The results showed that a continuous pyrolysis process can efficiently recover styrene from waste polystyrene and provide a theoretical basis for its industrial application.

Thermal Pyrolysis of Polystyrene Aided by a Nitroxide End-Functionality Improved Process and Modeling of the Full Molecular Weight Distribution

Antonio Monroy-Alonso et al.

Summary: A significantly improved thermal pyrolysis process for polystyrene is reported, which achieves higher styrene yield by optimizing the heating ramp during the initial stage of the process. The process was tested on samples of polystyrene synthesized via free-radical polymerization and nitroxide mediated polymerization, and the latter showed the highest styrene yield. The mathematical model used in this study corrects the errors of a previous model and provides further insight into the initial stages of the pyrolysis process.

Assessment and optimization of plastic waste pyrolysis using quality control techniques based on kinetic modeling

M. Soufizadeh et al.

Summary: In this study, the pyrolysis process was modeled using kinetic approaches, and quality control techniques were employed to assess and optimize the process. Temperature was found to be the most significant parameter affecting the activation energy required for the pyrolysis process, followed by conversion rate and heating rate. Optimization procedures were conducted to determine the optimal conditions for achieving the minimum activation energy.

Economic feasibility of plastic waste conversion to fuel using pyrolysis

Cesar Lubongo et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the economic feasibility of converting postconsumer plastics to fuel or oil using pyrolysis. The results show that plants with a scale above 60 tons per day can be profitable under current market conditions. However, considering investment returns and equity basis, the 30 tons per day plant is not profitable. The profitability of plastic-to-fuel conversion using pyrolysis is influenced by various factors.

Catalytic methods for chemical recycling or upcycling of commercial polymers

Sophia C. Kosloski-Oh et al.

Summary: Polymers have transformed our lives by providing inexpensive and versatile materials, but their longevity has led to environmental issues. Chemical recycling and upcycling are promising methods for dealing with polymer waste, but they are often cost-prohibitive. Catalysts can improve product selectivity in chemical recycling and upcycling processes.

A review on the modeling and validation of biomass pyrolysis with a focus on product yield and composition

Changlei Xia et al.

Summary: Modeling is considered essential for improving efficiency, product yield, and controllability in biomass pyrolysis. However, developing advanced models to estimate product yield and composition accurately remains a challenge due to the complexity in determining chemical compounds and quantities. This review discusses the potential solutions for more accurate modeling of biomass pyrolysis and highlights the limitations of current techniques like Py-GC/MS in industries for online product yield and composition measurements.
