Statistical power for cluster analysis

Edwin S. Dalmaijer et al.

Summary: Cluster algorithms are increasingly used in biomedical research, but there is no established method for calculating a priori statistical power in cluster analysis. Through simulation experiments, we found that clustering outcomes are mainly influenced by large effect sizes or the accumulation of many smaller effects, while differences in covariance structure have little impact. Sufficient statistical power can be achieved with relatively small samples (N = 20 per subgroup) as long as cluster separation is large. Additionally, we demonstrated that fuzzy clustering provides a more parsimonious and powerful alternative for identifying separable multivariate normal distributions.

Zinc and Cadmium Tolerance in Different Ecotypes of Elymus Nutans from Alpine Grassland of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Juan Qi et al.

Summary: The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, previously a clean environment, is now facing contamination with zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) in its soils. This study investigated the effects of Cd-Zn interactions on the native grass Elymus nutans, specifically on seed germination, seedling growth, physiological stress, and metal uptake. The results showed that both Cd and Zn impacted the germination and growth of the grass, with different effects varying with concentration. The study also found that moderate levels of heavy metals activated the plant's protective system, while higher concentrations destroyed it.

Effects of citric acid on antioxidant system and carbon-nitrogen metabolism of Elymus dahuricus under Cd stress

Zhehan Yang et al.

Summary: Exogenous citric acid application enhances cadmium (Cd) tolerance of Dahurian wildrye grass by increasing antioxidant capacity, reducing reactive oxygen, and promoting root Cd accumulation. CA also alters metabolic pathways, increasing the content of resistant substances and promoting amino acid metabolism. These changes contribute to the enhancement of Cd resistance in Dahurian wildrye grass.

Jasmonic acid alleviates cadmium toxicity through regulating the antioxidant response and enhancing the chelation of cadmium in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Yan Li et al.

Summary: Jasmonic acid (JA) can reduce the content of cadmium (Cd) in rice roots and shoots by promoting the combination of Cd on soluble pectin and inhibiting Cd movement into protoplasts. Additionally, JA application can help alleviate lipid peroxidation damage induced by Cd by reducing H2O2 content. Field experiments also showed that foliar spraying of JA can inhibit the transport of Cd from the stalk and root to the grain in rice.

The Role of Nitric Oxide Signaling in Plant Responses to Cadmium Stress

Yuting Meng et al.

Summary: Nitric oxide (NO) is a crucial signaling molecule in plants, playing roles in regulating plant growth and development, and responding to stress. Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a widespread environmental hazard that inhibits plant growth and threatens human health. Plants have evolved mechanisms to cope with Cd stress, and NO is known to be involved in these responses. However, the mechanisms by which Cd stress affects the accumulation of endogenous NO in plants and the role of exogenous NO in plant responses to Cd stress remain unclear.

Impact of Cadmium Stress on Growth and Physio-Biochemical Attributes of Eruca sativa Mill

Abdul Waheed et al.

Summary: The study found that Eruca sativa seedlings exposed to Cd stress diverted energy towards the synthesis of antioxidant and osmolyte metabolites. Despite this adaptation, the seedlings were still susceptible to Cd-induced oxidative stress, leading to a reduction in osmotic adjustment, an increase in oxidative damage, and a decrease in photosynthesis and growth. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid cultivating E. sativa on soil contaminated with Cd.

Growth, physiological, and temperature characteristics in chinese cabbage pakchoi as affected by Cd- stressed conditions and identifying its main controlling factors using PLS model

Lantao Li et al.

Summary: Despite being a well-known phenomenon, hormesis induced by heavy metals still lacks full understanding of biological mechanisms. Cadmium (Cd) is a prevalent heavy metal posing a huge threat to human health through intake or consumption of Cd-contaminated air or food. Studying the response of Chinese cabbage pakchoi to Cd-stressed conditions is critical, as it can accumulate Cd and serve as an important exposure pathway. Results showed that Cd stress inhibited growth and development of cabbage, and SOD activity may serve as a key factor for indicating Cd accumulation.
