Extracting the Strain Matrix and Twist Angle from the Moire Superlattice in van der Waals Heterostructures

Dorri Halbertal et al.

Summary: This article aims to provide a practical tool to extract the strain tensor and twist angle from an experimentally observable pattern. However, extracting these parameters from a spatially varying moire pattern is not straightforward, which is one of the limitations discussed.

Orderly disorder in magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene

Simon Turkel et al.

Summary: The magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene has shown a potential for engineering strongly correlated flat bands. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, researchers have observed a strong reconstruction of the moire lattice in real trilayer samples, leading to the formation of localized twist-angle faults. These localized regions exhibit different electronic structures compared to the background regions, resulting in a doping-dependent, spatially granular electronic landscape.

Rhombohedral trilayer graphene is more stable than its Bernal counterpart

R. Guerrero-Aviles et al.

Summary: Stackings in graphene play a pivotal role in its properties, including the recently discovered superconductivity of twisted bilayer graphene. Rhombohedral stacking in multilayer graphene has interesting flat bands near the Fermi level, but its stability has been debated. We conducted a detailed investigation of trilayer graphene stackings and found that rhombohedral and Bernal stackings have similar energies, and switching between stable stackings can be induced by shear deformation and symmetry breaking.

Stacking Relations and Substrate Interaction of Graphene on Copper Foil

Philip Schadlich et al.

Summary: The study reveals that during the CVD process, graphene interacts with the metal substrate leading to restructuring of the metal surface and step bunching during growth. Additionally, surface facets introduce strain and dislocations between successively nucleated layers, affecting the stacking relations.

Strain fields in twisted bilayer graphene

Nathanael P. Kazmierczak et al.

Summary: Twisted bilayer graphene exhibits two-regime reconstruction mechanics based on twist angle, with applied heterostrain accumulating anisotropically in saddle-point regions to generate distinctive striped strain phases. Nanoscale spatial fluctuations in twist angle and uniaxial heterostrain were statistically evaluated, revealing the prevalence of short-range disorder in moire heterostructures. This study provides insights into the twist-angle-dependent electronic behavior and structural relaxation, disorder, and strain in moire materials.

Ab Initio Theory of Photoemission from Graphene

Eugene Krasovskii

Summary: Angle-resolved photoemission from monolayer and bilayer graphene is studied based on an ab initio one-step theory, showing a strong enhancement of emission intensity around scattering resonances. The effect of photoelectron scattering by the underlying substrate on the polarization dependence of the photocurrent is discussed. Experimental observations of the emission intensity are well reproduced within the dipole approximation.

Heterostrain Determines Flat Bands in Magic-Angle Twisted Graphene Layers

Florie Mesple et al.

Summary: The moire of twisted graphene bilayers can generate flat bands where charge carriers lack enough kinetic energy to escape Coulomb interactions with each other, leading to the formation of novel strongly correlated electronic states. This rich physics relies on the precise arrangement between the layers and near the magic-angle, native heterostrain dominates twist in determining the flat bands.

Summary: This paper reports the existence of a one-dimensional valley-protected triangular network in small-angle twisted bilayer graphene at room temperature, and provides convincing experimental evidence through Fourier transforms analysis that the electronic transport in the counterpropagating one-dimensional states is indeed valley protected.
