Progress of vanadium phosphorous oxide catalyst for n-butane selective oxidation

Muhammad Faizan et al.

Summary: The utilization of lighter alkanes is vital for modern chemistry and reducing CO2 emission. N-butane, in particular, has garnered global attention due to its abundant production of maleic anhydride (MA). Vanadium phosphorous oxide (VPO) has proven to be the most effective catalyst for the selective oxidation of n-butane to MA. Interestingly, VPO exists in various structures, each with distinct phase composition, surface morphology, and physiochemical properties. Different preparation methods and activation conditions influence these properties. Improvements in catalytic performance can be achieved by adding promoters or co-catalysts, introducing templates or structural-directing agents, and employing new preparation strategies. This review summarizes research in these areas, as well as overall catalysis activity and final yield. Additionally, it discusses the reaction mechanism, reaction kinetics, and key issues related to various industrial applications of VPO, such as exothermic reactions, phosphorus and water supplementation, deactivation, and pretreatment with air/n-butane.
