Fluorescence sensing strategy for xanthine assay based on gold nanoclusters and nanozyme

Mengjun Wang et al.

Summary: Rigidifying the gold-thiolate shell is an effective strategy to enhance the fluorescence of gold nanoclusters (GNCs). In this study, ultrabright lysozyme-functionalized 5-methyl-2-thiouracil gold nanoclusters (MT-LZ@GNCs) were synthesized and exhibited remarkable luminescent properties. By combining MT-LZ@GNCs with iron-doped carbon-nanosheet (Fe/C NS) mimicking peroxidase-like activity, a novel fluorescent nanoprobe was developed for the quantitative analysis of xanthine. The proposed sensing platform showed a wide detection range and a low detection limit, with potential applications in real sample monitoring.

An Overview of Antibiotic Resistance and Abiotic Stresses Affecting Antimicrobial Resistance in Agricultural Soils

Abdullah Kaviani Rad et al.

Summary: Excessive antibiotic use in healthcare and livestock farming has led to the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as a major environmental threat. Non-biological stressors such as soil salinity and water pollution can impact AMR in agricultural soils, leading to reduced yields and lower quality of agricultural products. The study found that soil contaminants from fertilizers, heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and sewage sludge contribute significantly to the development of AMR by increasing the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARBs) in agricultural soils. Among the technologies tested, salinity and heat were found to be more effective in reducing ARGs and AMR. Strategies to mitigate AMR in agricultural soils include integrated control of antibiotic usage and primary sources of ARGs.

Antibody assisted graphene oxide coated gold nanoparticles for rapid bacterial detection and near infrared light enhanced antibacterial activity

Shimayali Kaushal et al.

Summary: A hybrid antibody biosensor based on graphene oxide-coated gold nanoparticles was developed for fast, specific, and high sensitivity foodborne bacterial detection. The biosensor showed colorimetric and spectrophotometric changes up to 10(3) and 10(2) CFU, respectively, when incubated with Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium for 5 minutes. Immobilized antibodies on the hybrid nanoparticle biosensor were specific to bacteria and exhibited specific photoablation of bacteria upon infrared exposure. This antibody-functionalized biosensor allowed for rapid optical detection and extermination of foodborne bacteria.
