Emergence of extensively drug-resistant Aeromonas hydrophila complex isolated from wild Mugil cephalus (striped mullet) and Mediterranean seawater

Hamza Mohamed Eid et al.

Summary: This study investigated the antimicrobial susceptibility and virulence of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Aeromonas spp. in wild Mugil cephalus and its surrounding seawater along the coastal road of Port Said, Egypt. The results showed that most of the isolated strains exhibited resistance to multiple antimicrobial agents and carried virulence genes. These findings highlight the potential risk of antibiotic resistance in bacteria from wild mullet and seawater.

Identification, antibiotic resistance, and virulence profiling of Aeromonas and Pseudomonas species from wastewater and surface water

Reshme Govender et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of various sources of pollution on the occurrence, antibiotic resistance profile, and virulence signatures of Aeromonas spp. and Pseudomonas spp. in aquatic environments. The results showed high levels of antibiotic resistance in both bacterial species and a strong association between virulence genes and antibiotic resistance. This highlights the potential health risks posed to communities through exposure to contaminated water.

Bacterial diversity assessment of world's largest sewage-fed fish farms with special reference to water quality: a Ramsar site

Inderjeet Tyagi et al.

Summary: The study examined the bacterial community structure in the East Kolkata Wetlands (EKWs), the world's largest sewage-fed fish farms, and revealed their correlation with environmental variables, particularly water quality parameters. The analysis showed an abundance of specific bacterial genera in EKWs and highlighted the impact of variables like dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, and chemical oxygen demand on the bacterial community structure. The results suggested an inverse relationship between the abundance of certain genera and BOD/COD, indicating poor management and inefficient functioning of the man-made wetland.

Virulence and antimicrobial resistance potential of Aeromonas spp. associated with shellfish

L. A. D. S. De Silva et al.

Summary: Aeromonas spp. are bacteria associated with seafood-related outbreaks worldwide. With the increasing trend of shellfish consumption, shellfish-related bacterial infections are being reported frequently, with certain species of Aeromonas spp. becoming foodborne pathogens of major concern.
