Sea-Ice Detection From Near-Nadir Ku-Band Echoes From CFOSAT/SWIM Scatterometer

Charles Peureux et al.

Summary: This study introduces the SWIM instrument on board CFOSAT and focuses on the utilization of SWIM data for ice region study. The study proposes an off-nadir data-based sea-ice flag to improve wave spectrum retrieval and explore the potential of sea-ice monitoring with near-nadir Ku-band active sensors. The accuracy of the proposed flag is validated through comparisons with other reference datasets, and the performance differences between beams are characterized.

Rapid glacier mass loss in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau since the year 2000 from satellite observations

Fanyu Zhao et al.

Summary: A study found that maritime glaciers in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau have experienced significant mass loss over the past two decades, with the strongest depletion observed in the Hengduan Mountains. Glaciers in Bomi County play a dominant role in the regional mass balance, despite having a slower rate of elevation changes. The study also highlights the impact of glacier terminus types on melting, with lake-terminating glaciers experiencing higher mass loss rates.

Climate change threatens terrestrial water storage over the Tibetan Plateau

Xueying Li et al.

Summary: The Tibetan Plateau, as a major freshwater source for Asia, is experiencing significant net loss in terrestrial water storage, especially in the Amu Darya and Indus basins. Factors such as glacier retreat, lake expansion, and subsurface water loss contribute to this trend. The projected decline in water-supply capacity poses a critical water resource threat to these regions.

Reconstructed eight-century streamflow in the Tibetan Plateau reveals contrasting regional variability and strong nonstationarity

Yenan Wu et al.

Summary: This study reconstructs the annual streamflow from five headwater regions in the South and East Tibetan Plateau for eight centuries, revealing wet and dry periods and a dividing line of regional moisture regimes. The study also demonstrates temporal nonstationarity in streamflow variability and an increase in extreme flows during the instrumental periods.

Investigating the Effect of Lake Ice Properties on Multifrequency Backscatter Using the Snow Microwave Radiative Transfer Model

Justin Murfitt et al.

Summary: Recent investigations have used polarimetric decomposition and numerical models to study the interaction between radar signals and lake ice. This study is the first to use the snow microwave RT (SMRT) model to explore how different frequencies and polarizations are affected by changes in ice properties. The results show that the response of backscatter is influenced by surface ice layer bubble radius and ice-water interface roughness, indicating that surface scattering at the ice-water interface is the dominant scattering mechanism. The SMRT model is a valuable tool for understanding how backscatter responds to changes in freshwater lake ice properties and can be used to develop inversion models.

A New Approach for the Estimation of Lake Ice Thickness From Conventional Radar Altimetry

Anna Mangilli et al.

Summary: A novel and efficient method (retracking approach) is proposed in this study for estimating lake ice thickness (LIT) using radar altimetry data. The method, based on physical modeling of radar echoes, provides accurate LIT estimates and shows good agreement with simulations from a thermodynamic lake ice model and in situ measurements.

Lake Level Change From Satellite Altimetry Over Seasonally Ice-Covered Lakes in the Mackenzie River Basin

Yuande Yang et al.

Summary: Variations in water levels of seasonally ice-covered subarctic lakes are important indicators of environmental and climatic change. Satellite altimetry can be used to remotely sense these lakes, but the lake phenology is complex due to multiple radar reflection surfaces. This study introduces a modified retracker method to improve the accuracy of lake level measurements, demonstrating better results compared to traditional methods.

50 years of lake ice research from active microwave remote sensing: Progress and prospects

Justin Murfitt et al.

Summary: Lake ice in northern latitudes is an important feature that plays a role in weather modulation, travel, and impact on fish habitat and access to freshwater. Global Climate Observing System identifies lake ice cover and thickness as Essential Climate Variables. Climate warming trends have led to thinner ice and longer open water season, increasing the importance of remote sensing for lake ice monitoring. Future research should focus on advancing the understanding of active microwave signals, applying machine learning algorithms to ice classification, exploring ice thickness retrieval methods, and considering factors like data availability and snow on lake ice.

An improved modeling of precipitation phase and snow in the Lancang River Basin in Southwest China

ZhongYing Han et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve precipitation phase and snow modeling for the Lancang River basin using a hydrological model and multisource remotely sensed data. Results show that using MODIS land surface temperature product and air temperature product can more precisely distinguish precipitation phase. Snowfall and snowmelt are primarily controlled by rainfall and snowfall temperature thresholds in snow modeling, with in situ observations potentially leading to overestimation of snowmelt runoff.

River ice phenology and thickness from satellite altimetry: potential for ice bridge road operation and climate studies

Elena Zakharova et al.

Summary: This study utilized Ku-band backscatter measurements from the Jason-2 and Jason-3 satellite missions to demonstrate the potential of radar altimetry for the retrieval of river ice phenology dates and ice thickness for the first time. The results show that the altimetric measurements are sensitive enough to detect the first appearance of ice and the beginning of thermal breakup on the lower Ob River. The study also reveals the uncertainties in ice event timing and river ice thickness retrievals, as well as the novel application of radar altimetry for predicting ice bridge road operations.
