The Impact of Hip Fracture on Geriatric Care and Mortality Among Older Swedes: Mapping Care Trajectories and Their Determinants

Anna C. Meyer et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of hip fractures on the trajectories of home care, nursing home residence, and mortality among individuals aged 65 years or more. The study also explored how living arrangements, cohabitation, frailty, and socioeconomic position influence these trajectories. The findings suggest that hip fractures have a significant impact on the use of elder-care services and mortality, and long-term care needs are largely related to poorer health profiles independent of the fracture itself.

Health care utilization and outcomes in older adults after Traumatic Brain Injury: A CENTER-TBI study

Marjolein van der Vlegel et al.

Summary: The incidence of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is increasingly common in older adults, and it poses a growing public health problem. However, there is a lack of research on TBI in older adults. This study provides an overview of healthcare utilization and outcomes after TBI in older adults, and identifies the determinants of these outcomes. The findings indicate that the rate of impairment and disability following TBI is substantial in older adults, and poorer outcomes are associated with worse pre-injury health. However, a considerable number of patients are able to return to their pre-injury functioning.

The Role of Frailty in Predicting 3 and 6 Months Functional Decline in Hospitalized Older Adults: Findings from a Secondary Analysis

Joao Tavares et al.

Summary: The study indicates that frailty at admission can predict functional decline in hospitalized older adults, particularly at discharge and 3 months post-discharge. Frail patients show more significant values in social support and hospital readmission, suggesting frailty as a predictor in adverse outcomes.

Traumatic brain injury: a comparison of diffusion and volumetric magnetic resonance imaging measures

Niall J. Bourke et al.

Summary: This study compared diffusion tensor imaging, neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging, and volumetric measures of brain atrophy in the identification of white-matter abnormalities after traumatic brain injury. It found that neurite density index may be more spatially specific and lower neurite density index could be a useful metric for examining slower processing speed. Abnormalities in fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity were the most sensitive diffusion measures.

Face-to-Face Versus Telephonic Extended Glasgow Outcome Score Testing After Traumatic Brain Injury

Sebastiaan M. Bossers et al.

Summary: This study was conducted in multiple Dutch university medical centers and assessed the agreement between face-to-face and telephonic assessment of GOS-E in 50 TBI patients. The results showed good consistency between the two methods, indicating that telephone assessment is a valid alternative when in-person contact is not feasible.
