Sarcopenic Dysphagia, Malnutrition, and Oral Frailty in Elderly: A Comprehensive Review

Alessandro de Sire et al.

Summary: Frailty is a common condition in the elderly and is closely associated with a higher risk of fragility fractures, hospitalization, and mortality. Sarcopenia and dysphagia are common pathological conditions in frail older people and often coexist, leading to dehydration and malnutrition. Poor oral health is also closely related to the aging process and can affect the immune system, wound healing, and the ability to maintain proper oral hygiene in older people. Therefore, poor oral health can lead to malnutrition and frailty.

Diet-induced inflammation is associated with sarcopenia and muscle strength in older adults who visit a frailty clinic

Tatsuro Inoue et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the association between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and sarcopenia. The results showed that diet-induced inflammation is associated with a higher likelihood of sarcopenia; however, this association disappeared after controlling for protein and energy intake.

Impact of exercise training on muscle mitochondria modifications in older adults: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Lorenzo Lippi et al.

Summary: Exercise has positive effects on the repair of muscle mitochondria in older adults, with different exercise modalities showing varying degrees of improvement. Resistance training appears to be the most studied and effective exercise modality for improving mitochondrial density and dynamics.

Evidence-based recommendations for resistance and power training to prevent frailty in community-dwellers

Helio Jose Coelho-Junior et al.

Summary: Frailty is a reversible state caused by multisystem impairment of the human body, leading to reduced resilience to stress events. It is associated with various adverse outcomes and substantial healthcare costs, making it a recognized public health issue. Strategies for managing frailty have been extensively discussed, with resistance and power training receiving attention for their potential to improve frailty-related parameters.
