Catalytic cracking of three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the presence of hydrogen donors

Iori Shimada et al.

Summary: This study investigates the catalytic cracking of three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the residue fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) process. It was found that most of the three-ring PAHs are converted to coke in the absence of hydrogen donors, but coke formation is suppressed and decomposition of PAHs is promoted in the presence of aliphatic hydrocarbons, saturated rings, and aromatic ring side chains. The reaction involves partial hydrogenation of three-ring PAHs and sequential cracking of saturated rings, leading to the formation of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and condensed two-ring PAHs. These findings are important for the effective utilization of heavy oil.

Simultaneous electrocatalytic hydrogenation of aldehydes and phenol over carbon-supported metals

Udishnu Sanyal et al.

Summary: Rh/C showed higher hydrogenation activity towards benzaldehyde, while Pd/C and Ru/C exhibited higher activity towards furfural. The presence of phenol affected the hydrogenation of benzaldehyde, but not furfural. Additionally, phenol suppressed its own hydrogenation, but enhanced the rates of carbonyl reduction for aldehydes.

Theoretical investigation of solvent effects on the selective hydrogenation of furfural over Pt(111)

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the importance of solvent effect in catalytic reactions, with methanol being able to enhance adsorption strength of reaction species and improve activity and selectivity in the hydrogenation of furfural over Pt(111). The presence of methanol contributes to a less thermochemical dehydrogenation of furfural and inhibits the dehydrogenation reaction, leading to higher activity and selectivity. Microkinetic model simulations showed that hydrogenation in methanol exhibited higher activity and selectivity compared to other solvents like vapor and toluene, indicating that a solvent with relatively strong polarity may favor the selective hydrogenation of furfural.

Catalytic hydrogenolysis of larix bark proanthocyanidins in ionic liquids produces UV blockers with potential for use in cosmetics

Meng Zhou et al.

Summary: Using ionic liquids as solvents and hydrogenolysis reaction, this study successfully reduced the degree of polymerization of larix bark proanthocyanidins while retaining their structure, resulting in depolymerized proanthocyanidins with enhanced UV-blocking properties when added to skin creams and sunscreens. This research expands the applications of green ionic liquid solvents and provides a technical foundation for cost-effective depolymerization of proanthocyanidins from larix bark, suggesting a potential high-value use as a UV-blocking additive in cosmetics.

Kinetics of furfural electrochemical hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis in acidic media on copper

Andrew S. May et al.

Summary: Electrochemical processes can be used to valorize biomass-derived species like furfural to produce fine chemicals and fuels. The competition between furfuryl alcohol and 2-methylfuran in the electrochemical hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis reactions of furfural over Cu catalysts in acidic conditions can be influenced by factors such as temperature and initial furfural concentration. The study suggests that the reaction mechanisms likely involve a non-competitive Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, with the rate limiting steps being the first hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol and the C-O cleavage to form 2-methylfuran.

Selective preparation and reaction kinetics of dimethyl carbonate from alcoholysis of methyl carbamate with methanol over ZnAl-LDO

Bo Jia et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates an optimal composite metal oxide ZnAl-LDO catalyst, prepared from Zn/Al layered double hydroxides (ZnAl-LDHs), for the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) through methyl carbamate (MC) alcoholysis. The catalyst achieved high selectivity for DMC production under optimal conditions and its catalytic performance was investigated through structural characteristics, kinetic modeling, and thermodynamic calculations.
