Solidification/stabilization and separation/extraction treatments of environmental hazardous components in electrolytic manganese residue: A review

Tongyuan Yang et al.

Summary: Electrolytic manganese residue (EMR), a by-product of electrolytic manganese metal production, contains hazardous components such as ammonia nitrogen, soluble manganese, and heavy metals. Despite numerous treatment methods proposed, there is still no mature and economical industrial process for treating EMR. Previous studies on separation/extraction (S/E) and solidification/stabilization (S/S) treatments highlight the importance of external field enhancement and synergy of multiple solid wastes to improve efficiency and treatment capacity. Achievements have been made in manganese treatment, but challenges remain regarding ammonia nitrogen in EMR.

Sebastian Slawski et al.

Summary: This paper presents research on how the introduction of fillers, such as manganese residue and manganese(II) oxide, affects the mechanical and tribological properties of epoxy composites produced by gravity casting. The results show that introducing fillers reduces abrasive wear but decreases the strength of the tested materials.

Manganese enrichment of polymetallic oceanic nodules via selective leaching process for energy storage applications

Summary: This study demonstrates that the non-ionic surfactant TX-100 enhances the leaching of metals such as Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu from manganese nodules under mild operational conditions. The study also shows that TX-100 enriches the Mn content in the leached residue by impeding its dissolution during leaching. The Mn-enriched residue has been evaluated for energy storage applications, which have not been previously reported in the literature.

Efficient removal of diethyl dithiocarbamate with EDTA functionalized electrolytic manganese residue and mechanism exploration

Mengke Li et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared a novel adsorbent by modifying electrolytic manganese residue (EMR), which showed promising adsorption capacity for diethyl dithiocarbamate (DDTC). The adsorption process was found to be mainly controlled by chemisorption on EDTA-EMR, and the mechanism exploration revealed the crucial sorption and chelation sites. High pH value was found to inhibit the adsorption capacity, and the as-synthesized adsorbents showed excellent performance after multiple cycles. Overall, EDTA-EMR is a low-cost, recyclable and effective adsorbent for DDTC removal.
