Crystallinity Tuning of Na3V2(PO4)3: Unlocking Sodium Storage Capacity and Inducing Pseudocapacitance Behavior

Hongyang Ma et al.

Summary: As a promising cathode material for sodium-ion batteries, Na3V2(PO4)(3) (NVP) has attracted extensive attention due to its high stability and fast Na+ ion diffusion. However, the reversible capacity based on the two-electron reaction mechanism is unsatisfactory due to the inactive M1 lattice sites during the insertion/extraction process. In this study, self-supporting 3D porous NVP materials with different crystallinity were fabricated on carbon foam substrates using a facile electrostatic spray deposition method. By tuning the crystallinity, the V5+/V4+ redox couple was effectively activated and three-electron reactions for sodium storage were achieved in NVP. An ultra-high specific capacity of 179.6 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 C was achieved in a disordered NVP sample due to the coexistence of redox reactions from V4+/V3+ and V5+/V4+ couples. Additionally, a pseudocapacitive charge storage mechanism induced by the disordered structure was observed in the NVP electrode. An innovative model was proposed to understand this disorder-induced pseudocapacitance phenomenon in the polyanion cathode material.
