This paper investigates the reliable communication in Internet of Things for railways (IoT-R) under high mobility scenarios and strict energy constraints. The orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is proposed to overcome the challenges in high Doppler environments and has lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) compared to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing. The peak windowing technique is used to reduce PAPR of OTFS and the simulation results show its efficiency in IoT-R applications.
The internet of things (IoT) has beenwidely considered to be integrated with high-speedrailways to improve safety and service. It is im-portant to achieve reliable communication in IoT forrailways (IoT-R) under high mobility scenarios andstrict energy constraints. Orthogonal time frequencyspace (OTFS) modulation is a two-dimensional mod-ulation technique that has the potential to overcomethe challenges in high Doppler environments. In addi-tion, OTFS can have lower peak-to-average power ra-tio (PAPR) compared to orthogonal frequency divisionmultiplexing, which is especially important for the ap-plication of IoT-R. Therefore, OTFS modulation forIoT-R is investigated in this paper. In order to decreasePAPR of OTFS and promote the application of OTFSmodulation in IoT-R, the peak windowing techniqueis used in this paper. This technique can reduce thePAPR of OTFS by reducing the peak power and doesnot require multiple iterations. The impacts of differ-ent window functions, window sizes and clipping levels on PAPR and bit error rate of OTFS are simulatedand discussed. The simulation results show that thepeak windowing technique can efficiently reduce thePAPR of OTFS for IoT-R.
