Mechanism for the Uplift of Gongga Shan in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau Constrained by 3D Magnetotelluric Data

Feng Jiang et al.

Summary: The 3D resistivity model of the Gongga Shan region obtained through inversion of magnetotelluric data reveals that the uplift of the mountain is primarily attributed to the underthrusting of the Yangtze Craton, with additional uplift possibly due to transpression on a restraining bend of the Xianshuihe faults. This model challenges previously published geodynamic models and provides new insights into the geological processes at play in the region.

The mechanism of deep material transport and seismogenic environment of the Xiaojiang fault system revealed by 3-D magnetotelluric study

Nian Yu et al.

Summary: This study presents a 3-D resistivity model of the lithosphere in the Xiaojiang fault system (XJFS), which provides insights into the tectonic history and material transport mechanism in the Tibetan Plateau. The model reveals high-resistivity anomalies in the upper-middle crust that may be remnants of the Emeishan large igneous province. The lower crust and upper mantle display low-resistivity anomalies possibly due to the presence of hydrogen. The seismic activity in the area is divided into three categories based on the distribution and structure of resistivity. The tectonic activity in XJFS involves rigid block extrusion, ductile deformation with channel flow, and upwelling of mantle materials. Weak crustal materials from the Tibetan Plateau are blocked by the modified lithosphere and the South China block, flowing southwestward along the XJFS.

Sedimentary structure of the Sichuan Basin derived from seismic ambient noise tomography

Xin Xia et al.

Summary: Constructing a three-dimensional velocity model of the sedimentary layer in the Sichuan Basin using ambient noise tomography method reveals variations in sediment thickness and S-wave velocity values within different geologic units, with thicker sediment in the margins and lower S-wave velocity anomalies possibly caused by large-scale landslides and surrounding orogenic activities.

Mantle Dynamics Beneath the Sichuan Basin and Eastern Tibet From Teleseismic Tomography

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: The Sichuan Basin may have a southeastward subducting Yangtze Block with the eastward growth of the Tibetan Plateau causing lithospheric deformation and potential delamination, accelerating the development of fault zones and plateau extrusion. Limited horizontal lithospheric extrusion is observed north of the Sichuan Basin in the East Qinling orogen.

The Community Velocity Model V.1.0 of Southwest China, Constructed from Joint Body- and Surface-Wave Travel-Time Tomography

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: The study aims at building a high-resolution community velocity model (CVM) of crust and uppermost mantle in southwest China by joint inversion of body- and surface-wave travel-time data to address the issues of consistent earthquake locations and velocity models. The resulting VP and VS models show two low-velocity zones in the middle-lower crust and a prominent high-velocity region. These new models serve as the first version of the CVM in southwest China for future studies.

Depth Extent and Vp/Vs Ratio of the Chenghai Fault Zone, Yunnan, China Constrained From Dense-Array-Based Teleseismic Receiver Functions

Xiaohuan Jiang et al.

Summary: Fault zone (FZ) structure plays a crucial role in earthquake rupture propagation and seismic hazard assessment. A new 2-D dense-array-based inversion method has been developed in this study to obtain high-resolution FZ structure models using teleseismic receiver functions. The method shows effectiveness in identifying LVZ depth extent and Vp/Vs ratio simultaneously, and has demonstrated stability and improvement compared to existing methods. The application of this method to the Chenghai fault (CHF) in Yunnan, southwestern China, has provided valuable insights into the LVZ beneath the fault and shows promise for imaging shallow low-velocity structures in fault zones and sedimentary basins.
