Catalytic reductive cyclization of 2-nitrobiphenyls using phenyl formate as CO surrogate: A robust synthesis of 9H-carbazoles

Doaa R. Ramadan et al.

Summary: This paper describes a palladium/phenanthroline catalyzed reductive cyclization of o-nitrobiphenyls to 9H-carbazoles operated by in situ released CO. The presence of phenyl formate is essential to avoid the use of high-pressure equipment and allows the reaction to be performed in a single thick-walled glass tube. The selectivity of the reaction is influenced by the identity of the base catalyzing the formate decomposition, and the stability of the catalyst is affected by the presence of chloride anions. The optimized catalytic system exhibits excellent stability and tolerance to moisture and air, enabling the reaction to be conducted with low catalyst loadings.

Sodium Hypophosphite as a Bulk and Environmentally Friendly Reducing Agent in the Reductive Amination

Fedor Kliuev et al.

Summary: NaH2PO2 has been found to be an effective reducing agent in promoting reductive amination. It possesses characteristics of being nontoxic, stable, environmentally friendly, and readily available in large quantities, making it a potential competitor to classical reductants used in the target process. A low E factor of 1 was achieved for the substrate scope. Various carbonyl compounds reacted with amines under the developed conditions, demonstrating compatibility with a wide range of functional groups. The reaction conditions were successfully scaled up to 200-fold.

Mechanochemical Transformation of CF3 Group: Synthesis of Amides and Schiff Bases

Satenik Mkrtchyan et al.

Summary: In this study, two mild, solvent-free mechanochemical coupling transformations of CF3 group with nitro compounds were successfully demonstrated, leading to amides or Schiff bases. Ytterbia was used as a catalyst to facilitate the process, which involves C-F bond activation and the use of Si-based reductants/oxygen scavengers. This work represents the first example of utilizing mechanical energy to promote the transformation of the inert CF3 group into other functionalities.

Advantage of Using NaH2PO2 over Alkali Metal Formates as a Hydrogen Source for Pd-gC3N4 Catalyzed Hydro-Dehalogenation of Aryl Halides

Sourav Chakraborty et al.

Summary: Halogenated and polyhalogenated aromatic compounds are harmful to human health and the environment, and can be treated through catalytic hydro-dehalogenation reactions. This study compared the hydro-dehalogenation of aryl halides using different hydrogen transfer sources with Pd-gC(3)N(4) catalyst, and found that NaH2PO2 is more advantageous than alkali metal formates. The recyclability of Pd-GCN catalyst was excellent, allowing for multiple cycles with sustained activity.
